Lame comment Ryan. This car is quicker than the base 997 and is supposed to be a very focused drivers car. MAYBE you could get away with saying that about the base Boxster, but not this one, it's pure sports car.
Cayman Snaps At 911's Heels orsche is gradually revealing more details of its fourth model, the Cayman, which slots into the line-up between the Boxster S and the base 911 Carrera. Based on the mid-engined Boxster, but with the increased structural rigidity of a fixed roof, the Cayman is being billed by Porsche as an out-and-out drivers' car. The car's name reflects this; apparently a Cayman is a small but exceptionally nimble type of crocodile. The only version available at launch will be the hardcore Cayman S, priced at £50,000. This policy is believed to be designed to discourage the purely aspirational or status-orientated buyer of a 911 from dropping down to the new coupe. The Cayman S will have a new 3.4-litre version of the Boxster's flat-six, producing 295bhp (just 26bhp shy of the 997 Carrera), and the brakes are likely to be Porsche's carbon-ceramic items. The rest of the spec is thought to reach almost Clubsport levels, and there is talk of lighter body panels and limited creature comforts inside. The suspension retains the MacPherson strut set-up of the Boxster, but there are extensive changes to the geometry to take advantage of the increased rigidity. To keep costs down, front body panels are carried over from the Boxster, although the rear has been completely redesigned. Other items that will be familiar to Boxster drivers include the the six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic transmission options. Eventually a PDK (Porsche Doppel Kupplung) dual-clutch system could be an option. The Cayman will also be practical, with both front and rear boots, a large parcel shelf and a hatchback. Perfect for a weekend away at the Nürburgring, where Walter Röhrl has already bettered the 997's 8min 15sec lap time. The Cayman S is due to go on sale in the UK in November.
Yes of course. Every Saturday morning and Sunday after church my dad would take me and my two brothers on drives through Santa Barbara, Montecito, our through wine country etc in his old 930.
i think the cayman is neat. wouldnt own one, but it is a nice looking car. the panamera is good looking, they will sell many of those. direct competition to the quattroporte and it will spank it with better reliability build quality and dealer attention.
Thanks as I always wondered if real people could fit back there..(kids) As a dad, the 911 would still be my first choice even over the new Cayman. I do believe Porsche worries a bit too much about the performance heirachy of its sports car lineup. Porsches insistance that the Cayman S not outperform the 911 S could be its downfall if they are not careful. IMHO This is Porsches chance to move upward and onward. Want the ultimate 2 seat porsche ? Cayman S Want the ulitmate 2 + 2 seat Porsche ? 911 S or GT2 or GT3 or TT... 2+2 has for many years been quite an attractive quality for the 911 lineup. Its nice to be able to take the kids from time to time in the Sports car! 2 seat Cayman S should...imho perform the best it can and they should not worry about how the 2 +2 911 S relates to it from a performance comparision perspective...
I hope they view the Cayman as the driver's version of the 911. They need to stay clear of gimmicks and fluff now found on the 911 like the Wart and the LCD screen, at least in the basic configuration. Keep it sporting, please. Keep the blingy bits optional, please. Sad to say this, but Porsche no longer makes a car which I want to buy. Maybe the Cayman will turn that around. But I will definitely specify the "delete model designation" option if that happens!
Your right..I don't think the lightweight GT2 or GT3 have back seats....(sorry about that) still its based off the 911 chassis which is what I meant... Would be cool if the Cayman GT3 got the same engine as whats in the Gt3... I don't see the cayman running a turbo motor but I do believe naturally aspirated "hot "versions would be cool. I'd wonder if the Cayman S with a GT 3 motor might not kick some serious @ss.. I do personally believe the 2 + 2 nature of the 911 really has helped its sales over the years..... Of course the offshoots like the GT3 and G2 don't have to have back seats to be based on the chassis. (the reason I say this is at 45 w/a family I've often thought about selling my worked Z06 Corvette which is a two seater and getting a 2 + 2 911. In the end I don't because as much as I respect the porsche 911 I just don't have the passion to pull the trigger and sell the C5 Z06 to get one. Not a flame just a story shooting the breeze) Tons of new 911's up around here....and I believe the 2 +2 nature really helps rack the miles on them with the kids. All that said....I think the Cayman will be a success, just not sure Porsche should worry that the Cayman will steal too many sales of the 911
I'd be happier if it had a folding spoiler option. Don't care for the boy-racer look of the fixed spoiler. That minor quibble aside, the current GT3 might be the last honest 911. I just hope they don't mess it up with active steering, nav-ready center console, The Wart, et al. And letting us check the oil with a real dipstick would be a thoughtful gesture...
