http://www.autospies.com/article/index.asp?articleId=6235&categoryId=21 Autospieds seem to like it. I like the current gauge layout. This looks plain/boring to me where as the current ones looks slick as hell. Ah well. Edit: and by current gauge set I mean the set on on the CLs. I'm not a fan of the SLs as much. I hate the current Chyrsler Pacifica layout. LED looks half done, out of place, but I hope that is because it is a 'work in progress.'
Just goes to show that, as a carmaker, MB is more confused than ever. They're already a nightmare when they're out of warranty. Imagine when this thing breaks. RMX
Can't speak to the maintenance issues, but I'll go on record to say that I like it. Especially the fact that it changes depending on the task at hand. Another first by MB.
I think its great ! Now one will be able to change color, style, gauge types , and locations of them. I really dont see much of a downside. How reliable is your TV ?
It's not a regular television. It's LCD making it pretty much bullet proof in most cases but, the night vision would be very distracting to many people. It's kinda of ironic that they have night vision built in a part of the car that you look at to see at night and will blind your own natural night vision using it.
I'm sure they have thought of that and if it was blinding in testing it would have been changed. As an LCD, it could be whatever color the developer wants. It could be colored red to preserve night vision or it could be set to whatever brightness level is non-distracting. I like it.
This "feature" alone would prevent me from buying this car (not that I would ever buy a Mercedes ). fwiw, I had the same objection with the electronic IP in the S2000, which is a car I otherwise would have considered buying.
Come on guys. It is amazing. Don't give impressions until trying the real thing. More pictures are available on my personal website. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Anyone remember Sports Car international issue #142... (1/01) P. 41 The Porsche CGT It had an LCD guage. Back then, I thought that's going to be the new auto gizmo to come. Mark my words, I already see it and if I can patent it, I'd do it in a heartbeat; somebody out there is going to make a LCD retro-fit for cars that lets you do what you see above and make custom skinable guages. Download guage skins for your car. To you and I, that is pretty stupid, but there is a market out there that will eat it up.
So...you're not supposed to look out the window? Are they expecting MB owners to be making full IFR approaches into Aspen now? RMX
No. The night vision is there only to help you clearly see the road at night. You can't depend on it for driving because your sense of speed and proportionality would be wrong. A typical use of night vision is to look at the screen every 20secs, for example, to get a general feel of what's around you and what's ahead that you can't see using your regular beams.
It looks cool. Saw 1-2 of these cars near Hotel du Rhone and Rue du Rhone, in the flesh they don't look bad at all. I really love the front. BTW, and it's out of topic, are you egyptian ?
Actually, i don't think, but maybe/probably we share some "connaissances". In fact i was asking that because we used to have a small company in Cairo, so it's funny. I used to spend quite some there as we had a flat in Maadi. I still have 1-2 friends there.
Night vision is the WORST and WILL BE DROPPED AS AN OPTION AFTER A FEW YEARS MARK MY WORDS! My Dad had the first night vision car in the world a 2000 cadillac DTS and it was a $2k flop of an option not helpful to anyone that doesn't live in the middle of the woods. Plus it is a pain to look down and ahead at the same time. Erik
I am defending the Mercedes system because I tried it. Please don't judge the car without trying it. The system in Cadillac has nothing to do with what Mercedes made. It doesn't project images on your windshield. Plus you don't need to look at the LCD and the road at the same time. All what you need is to look briefly to have a general feel of what's around you. Trust me, it help a lot in very dark areas.
Very. But there is a reason why it is Japanese and not German. I think this is a cool idea and inevitable, but I can't help but agree REMIX. Mercedes lost its way when they stopped over-engineering the fundamental parts of the car in favor of using electronics to do everything. The recent cars of the sensitronic cruise control being proved faulty and now being abandoned is a perfect example of the dead end they are on.
That system will save your butt in fog so thick, you can't see past your hood. That might not be a huge problem in PA, but on the coastal region in California... and the central California where the fog settles in the valley for days on end during the winter, glancing down for a brief moment to see what's ahead of you will make the difference to whether you are going to have a good day or a bad day riding in the back of an ambulance.
