Porsche sold approximately 14,000 sports cars (911 and 718) last year…

    … and 70,000 vehicles total (~25,000 Macans!)

Ferrari will certainly close the gap with its SUV.

It's astounding to think that Ferrari delivered 11K cars in a year, while there were less than 7500 328s built in 5 years. No wonder the modern units seem to be everywhere.

Compare production number growth to population growth.

Also, global population as India, China, Dubai, etc are disrupting the super car market too with their wild earnings and spendings. I don’t think they were a factor in the 60s-90s like they are now.

So the real question is how many a year is too many?

Porsches are so common place here they blend in like a Toyota. Go to Boca and every soccer mom and her 16 year old daughter have one. They’ve lost their magic.

I’ve driven 1980’s widow maker 911 turbos and after the first couple minutes of thrill, they feel like any other Porsche. I don’t think they have changed. They’re just phenomenal high quality predictable cars, as they have always been. At least they still make manual trans for people.

Consumer Reports ranks Porsche the 2nd most reliable vehicle out there….. I don’t think Porsche has gotten better or worse from what they were, just ramped up numbers as they become more affordable and people trust them “German cars” more.

The only magic Porsches are the 917, the 917-30 and the 908/3. Plus Mark Donohue's RSR IROC.

I think its all relative, the market has grown from what it was and in the grand scheme of things Ferrari is still exclusive.

No, they sold 300,000 vehicles in 2021. The majority of them were classified as trucks.

Porsche is dead to me. :(

It’s not what is was, I agree.

The bright spot is the GT2/3, which are apparently pure genius.

Also, Porsche Classic seems to have some investment to back it up. I take my 964 to the local AD and get VIP treatment for my 29-year old car.

I disagree guys… Porsche has always been what it is today. Just ramped up production numbers. Porsches are phenomenal vehicles. Ultra reliable while still pushing boundaries of tech and performance…. Even a 1970s Porsche had less pizazz than a Ferrari 308. They were always what they are today. We may just have nostalgia looking back on the few collectibles while forgetting all the others.

The Taycan is awesome too….. I commend them for changing with the times WHILE keeping production cars like the GT4 or any manual trans car really, for us enthusiasts…

Their financial vitality because of their SUVs and sedans will ensure they stay in business.

Buy a Ferrari if you want unique driving characteristics. Buy a Porsche if you want a turn key, solid, reliable, predictable performance daily driver.

I disagree. As an owner of a 1988 Porsche 944S and a 1995 Porsche 968 Cabriolet, I've had some first hand experience with the marquee.

In 1996, the powers that be at Porsche hired a Japanese consulting firm (Toyota, IIRC) to show them how to build their cars more efficiently. (i.e, cheaper)

A few years ago I visited the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Ga. I spent 90 minutes on their test track with a $100K 911 Carrera 4S Doppelkupplunge thing. The track was awesome. The Porsche? I've had more fun on an exit ramp in my 944S or on the Kennedy Expressway with my 968 Cabriolet.

    Just my opinion.

    Why?

Because they are flush with cash and build high quality sports cars because they are also selling SUVs which help fund their sports car program?

Did you prefer Porsche to stay near bankruptcy as it was in the 90s and utilitising the same basic chassis and doors and glass as they were for the prior 30 years and utilizing engines that were completely out gunned?

They moved on... David ghrol moved on... General electric moved on from the light bulb... Ford built something other than the model a. Lamborghini made cars instead of tractors... Formula one... Even allowed mid engined cars... And even old man Ferrari jumped on board.

The world is a crazy place... It keeps on moving.

Porsche delivers more than 300,000 vehicles
    12/01/2022

Strongest delivery result in the company’s history: Porsche delivered 301,915 vehicles to customers worldwide in fiscal year 2021, an increase of 11 per cent compared to 2020.

The models with the highest demand in 2021 were again the brand's SUVs, led by the Macan. 88,362 customers became Macan owners. The Cayenne followed in second place with 83,071 vehicles

The all-electric Porsche Taycan saw an outstanding increase: a total of 41,296 units, which is more than double the number of deliveries compared to the previous year. The sports car icon, the 911, was also handed over to more customers than ever before with 38,464 deliveries. The Panamera saw 30,220 deliveries. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman were delivered to 20,502 customers.

    https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2022/company/porsche-deliveries-2021-worldwide-27003.html

Total number of sportscars last year - 58,966. Total number of SUV's & sedans last year - 242,949. Four of every five Porsche's built last year were not sportscars.

    This, is Porsche?

Don't forget that around the same time as your 944 they were also building the 924. At least the Cayenne/Taycan/Panamera are good cars even they're not for you.

    Yes.

I'm sorry but this is what is required these days. The amount of regulations it takes to homologate cars is massive. To remain competitive this is what it takes.

I mean you are 100% allowed to think the way you are. Don't take the tone of this as me be condescending etc...

To attempt to illustrate my position or argument... Here is what I would say...

If a person has a favorite item on the menu at his favorite restaurant... Is it reasonable for this person to think that every single other item.on the menu should be removed? Especially when what people order are ordered 4 or 5 times more than what he orders?

Are they being obtuse for not bending to his will? Is it reasonable for him to expect the restaurant to only serve his favorite item... Which would force them to close... If they complied... Would he be happy or satisfied that his favorite restaurant and meal was no longer available... But hey... They kept it real all the way till the end.
