Correct fit is critical for helmets, but if you have chosen your brand and size I highly recommend Helmet City for selection and quick shipment:

If you buy a new SA helmet it will be SA2005 and most sanctioning bodies no longer allow SA95 helmets to be used. Most require SA2000 at a minimum.

Don't scrimp on safety gear.....I'm amazed by guys who will dump unlimited funds into their track car and gripe endlessly about needing to buy a new helmet.

    Good luck, have fun!!

Yes, don't buy cheap safety equipment. As for a helmet, buy the one that fits you best.

What are you planning to do in SCCA?

    John,

Welcome to SCCA and am sure you will have a great time! Racing wheel to wheel is so much more fun, rewarding and serious than HPDE days. As for best gear, visit your local shop as it is best to try on the gear before you buy. Personally, i prefer upper line Sparco for suit and gloves and HJC for helmet.

Remember: You want a tight(ish) helmet and NOT one that may very comfortable (read: loose). Helmets from various manufacturers do fit differently and people's heads are shaped differently so try before you buy PLUS salespeople at the store know their business.

Have a great time and as always...

+1 I'd always bought Bell helmets (carbon Kevlar) and as b-mak says don't cheap out. You've only got one head. For driving suits, gloves and shoes I'd always bought mine from demon-tweeks in England. Even with a bad exchange rate and shipping their prices are competitive. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/default.asp?cls=MSPORT
