I think it's time to start a thread dedicated to who should replace Massa at the end of the season.

    It should be this man

    Heikki Kovalainen

He fits the mold of Ferrari #2 perfectly

He would be better than Massa and he has a lot going for himself.

    But:

He is too old. Ferrari needs to think ahead.

...unless we're talking stop gap measure here for one year until Vettel joins. ;)

Do you guys remember 2008 and 2009? Heikki was useless. He finished with about half the points of his teammate the first year, and the following year he did even worse than his teammate.

In 2008, the McLaren was fast... Lewis got on the podium 10 times, Heikki only managed it three times.

He's another Massa. Maybe not quite as horrendously bad as Massa, but not much better. There's no reason they can't get a guy who isn't top shelf but who doesn't suck. Kobayashi would be perfect for the role. "He crashes a lot" - but he also drives fantastically, and look how much Massa crashes. It was like a foregone conclusion last year that Massa was gonna crash each race - just a matter of when :)

I think Heikki would score more points compared to Massa maybe not 1-2 2-3 1-3 finishes as we would like.

You see, I don't think he crashes that much? Especially this season. Call it a maturity year.

He's been driving fantastic most times he gets in a car. If he or Perez was driving for Ferrari now they would probably be ahead of Red Bull in the standings.

Yeah, I see Kovalainen as a lateral move. Not much gained.

Kobayashi on the other hand is exciting, quick, has a decent amount of experience by now. But the KEY thing is, he wouldn't mind being a #2 at all, but still has speed and the ability to pass! Very rarely do you ever see Kobayashi fade in a race. Perez would be a good option but he sees himself as a future WDC so I'm not sure how willing he would be to play second fiddle to ALO. On the other hand, Kobayashi would be thrilled to have a Ferrari drive.

Perez is not a good #2. He is young enough to think he will be allowed to win. Heikki makes a good choice. Great public and Corporate face and has done the job. No matter who goes there, assuming Felipe is gone, there is no certainty they will do very well.

Until Alonso leaves the #2 job is a no win situation for anyone who even remotely dreams of winning a title. They cannot go there with that aspiration. They will be disappointed by the atmosphere presented to them in that area.
