    Howdy,
I am excited about the shop being finished up.

Now I am thinking about lighting and a lift.

I have just started thinking lighting, and wanted to see what options their might be?

Been checking into lifts, and thinking four post lift, so I can store a car underneath and be able to move it around. I have plenty of height, with 18' ceilings.
I have been looking at the products from Quality Lift and Bendpak. Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Bob

With your ceiling heights the best options are either LED, T5, T8, or CFL High Bay‎ lights. Or a combination of those types.

For what it is worth, I have a BendPak four poster (which works well) with multiple fluorescent tubes above....BUT I ran a course of fluorescents on the walls at about 4 feet off the floor all around the lift so that I have light coming up from below when a car is up on the lift. This illuminates the bottom of the car on the lift. Otherwise the the car on the lift casts a shadow from the ceiling...just where you need the light.

My garage is nearly complete, I decided on a Bendpak HD9 with two rolling bridge jacks, a lift master 3500 opener, and 24 recessed can dimmable led floods which the wife calls stadium lighting.

Any pics of the big ass lights installed? Only problem I can see is to get even lighting you would need multiple fixtures for no shadows.

    I could run 16 8ft long T8 4 bulb fixtures for less than 1500.

Just 8 of the big ass lights would be 2700 and I'm not sure that would be enough for no shadows.

    Cool,
    Thanks for the information.
On the BendPak HD9, did you bolt it down? Or get the caster kit? Also, how does the rolling jack work? I understand you can do wheel work with them, but not sure how they work with the lift? Any thoughts on that?

Thanks, might try to order a couple of the lights, and if I don't like them, I can put them in my other garage. Kinda expensive……

First you need to figure out how many footcandles of illumination you want, then work backwards from there to know how many lumens you need in total. Will this shop be for a lot of hands on work, or more a storage garage? Ceiling height is mostly what determines which fixture and reflector design is best for your case. In my recent build I wanted a moderately stupid level of illumination. Even though I only have 12 foot ceilings, I found that T5HO fixtures with a diffusing (as opposed to clear) cover have a nice, even spread. I ended up with 8 6-bulb fixtures and 6 4-bulb fixtures. I wanted the fewest number of fixtures, and as a T5HO has more lumen output than a T8 bulb, I could get by with less fixtures and still have about 200 candle-feet of illumination. (which is borderline stupid overkill, but that's how I roll. ;)) I also have a separate halogen track lighting system that is more for general use or decorative lighting. If I'm working though, I fire up the T5's and it is fantastic!

    How many footcandles? http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84391

Here is a handy calculator: Lighting Layout Estimator | Lighting Area Calculator | GE Lighting North America

    Also from WilliamH's company: http://www.hubbelllighting.com/content/solutions/retrofit/tools/files/recommended-footcandles.pdf

A few pics of my lighting during and after construction. Notice the difference in the brightness upstairs vs downstairs. It's not quite THAT blinding in person, but its bright. Makes work on the cars so much easier. Also, you'll note I have a flat black ceiling which absorbs a lot of light, so this is one reason it went a little overboard on total lumens.

Can't really comment much as they were only installed last week, but here are my Bend-Paks in the new garage. Hoping to move all the permanent residents in the second week of December.
