I’ve been a little quiet of late in this forum. I finished 3 Porsche RSR projects, moved in December to spicewood, Texas built a new shop and have 2 dinos too turn my attention to. I bought 4022 blu scuro euro and got sent for a full restoration 1336 an early Usa car red now but verifying original color. I’ll start a new thread on each car. Lots of metal work on both!!
    Pictures coming

Jon, I’ve seen a couple of your RSR recreations in emails from Sheehan. They are beautifully done with great attention to detail, as you always do, but I’m curious about something, and this applies to RSR recreations that I’ve seen from other shops as well. Given the great lengths and efforts you apply to these cars, why not use center lock hubs as the original RSRs do, instead of five bolt? Is it a matter of cost or availability?

    Thanks.

    Jack.

I'm very surprised there has been no comments on the indicator lights. When this Dino came to my shop it was the first thing I noticed as was looking at the metal work required to fix. I was then informed by Matthias this was a very special car. Once I learned it was the USA prototype and firt one imported to USA I realized those lights were staying as is!!

At first and second glance they look kind of ugly and odd and one can understand why they didn't go into production. That said, they will obviously need to stay and will add huge historic (And economical) value to the car. One off intermediate prototype car, how cool is that.

    Best, Peter

lovely that #01336 finally poped up and we can see the prototype features....
Ferrari actually classifys this Dino as an E-series car (should have E-series gearbox, looking forward to Jon confirming this) delivered to Luigi Chinetti Motors Inc. (USA)

One other car classified as E-series / prototype #01474 delivered to Canada (Yonge Steeles Motors Ltd.). The question is how this car looks like.... it received a factory fitted E-series gearbox no. 144E
Could have the same features as #01336....
Unfortunately no ownership history known apart from the first owners name Peter Dennis. If anybody has any information about this car, please let me know....

Both cars classied as E-series LHD, but officially not as US-model, #01336 as prototype

I like the uniqueness of the front turn signal light. Was chassis 01336 manufactured in 1971? Do the lenses show the DOT dates?

I noticed but just assumed (incorrectly) that they must have been installed as an expedient repair to front end damage or similar. Thanks for the explanation!

Denny shows this information. Not complete in July 1971. It's a shame no mention of prototype or front turn signal assemblies.

I believe that this Dino is the prototype for what became the US Spec version, which we now call the E Series Dino (Not E series, just US E Series). It was not the first US delivered Dino, but maybe the first one that met ALL US required DOT regulations.

I think a M Series body was pulled off the line and worked up with materials needed to meet US Federalizations requirements for safety and emissions.

I have Ferrari documents stating this Dino was “still owned by Ferrari” in July 1971, which is what Denny was most certainly referencing, however, there is no notes about it being incomplete or not finished. I would think once 01336 was put together, a good period of time would be required for all testing and so on to get the DOT approval.

What is certain to be true, is 01336 is going to have LOTS of unique things that will probables be specific to it, and most likely later seen, in more efficient/economical ways, on E Series. I imagine once Ferrari received approval, they had to productionalize the Range. Think of the smog equipment, bumper changes, structural changes for crash requirements, etc....

It is going to be very fun watching this come apart. What a cool glimpse into how sausage was made back 50 years ago.

‘73 factory RSR’s had 9’s and 11’s Fuchs with the 5 bolt pattern. There were some prototypes built with center locks. Center locks were used on RSR’s in ‘74 but on some RSR’s (IROC) 5 bolt Fuchs were still used.

Right. I was aware that the 2.8s and IROC cars had five bolt hubs. I think the 3 liter cars had center locks. I wonder about Gregg’s 1973 Daytona winning car.
