Anyone see A current affair about new point to point speed camera system being used in Victoria??? how do they work? will a radar/lasor pick them up?? I bet they will be in every state soon!!!
Victoria where? It would be helpful if you filled out your profile so we know what country you are in...
There was a great story in one of the major car magazines, Car and Driver I think, where a guy in Arizona driving some kind of Hyundia was ticketed for going some ridiculous speed, around 140mph I believe in the early AM on the freeway. Interesting story and may give some insight into your question. Sorry I don't know exactly the magazine. And yes, it would help if we knew which Victoria you mean, B.C.? Jeff
Victoria Australia, so wont worry most, if I find out more I shall post it, this was the story on tv. Police in Victoria are unleashing a new speed camera system called 'point to point' ahead of the Easter long weekend. The point to point system is made up of two speed cameras which both take images of every passing car and register the vehicle's speed. RELATED LINKS * How to beat the speed camera * Speed cameras: doubling the money The camera digitally photographs each vehicle at two points along a roadway to better gauge driver behaviour. If a driver slows down for one camera and speeds up for another the cameras will capture it. The average speed of the driver between the two points is the basis of the system. So if your average speed is above the limit then you will be booked. The cameras communicate with a central computer and incident reports are sent to the police regarding drivers who travel above the limit. The images are automatically verified by the system and then double checked by staff to ensure both images match up. The locations for the system are fixed and are listed on the Victorian Department of Justice website. The accuracy of the new system makes it nearly impossible to cheat, according to superintendent Shane Patton. "We're going to catch people, there's no way to avoid apprehension," said Patton. "We know it's going to work." In addition to its accurate readings, the system can also calculate the speed of a car before it passes the first camera in the point system, catching out drivers who slow down when they spot a camera. This technology is likely to catch a lot of drivers out, according to Wheels' magazine's John Cadogen. "Slowing down at speed cameras then speeding up is almost a national sport. These cameras will certainly stop people doing that," Cadogen said. Ten of the new camera systems will be unleashed on Victoria's Hume highway over the Easter weekend with plans to roll out more point to point systems in the coming months. The system has already been trialled in News South Wales. The two point system currently operates in both the UK and the Netherlands.
You'll get more responses in the Aussie section..... however I can't guarantee the quality of the discussion.. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=39 Someone needs to set up a coffee/muffin stand between the two cameras..
If they are the ones I am thinking about (two cameras about 1/2 to 1 mile apart) they are everywhere in England. They are a danger to people unfamiliar with the area as locals will blast up to them then brake like mad and slowly procede to the second camera only to blast away once past it. Stupid Stupid and more STUPID but I do believe they generate a profit under the guise of keeping the ignorant lay people safe. Russell
Its called a SPECS ARRAY http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/specs.htm If you want to send a bomb...http://www.speedcheck.co.uk/ They are not detectable as they dont emit anything, however they are fixed site so a GPS based warning system can mark their location. They use Active Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to read your licence plate number then work out your average speed between cameras (their photo spot is a few metres before you reach the camera so I dont see how they can work out your approach speed). You can "fool" them by having an illegible or incorrect licence plate, but thats obviously a seperate offence. They can be mounted any distance apart but need power, so unless solar powered cant be too remote (typically wire into street lighting power line). I believe they have the option of using the mobile phone network to talk to one another and then send a report by same to a remote control centre including digital photo of vehicle that has been caught. They are used in the UK in various locations, but mainly as protection for workers on motorway repairs as they work in slowing the average speed of vehicles down - which isnt a bad thing. But around North Nottingham they are used on a 2 lane dual carriageway that appears to be 40mph when its actually a 30mph limit, i.e. they are an income generator.
not strictly relevant to the tech. section, but if we're on the subject of speed camera websites then this is one of my favourites... http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm I'm not an anarchist, but I do like this site. Highlight is page 3 where some cameras have been literally blown up with explosives.
