    Hello all,

    I've noted that there has been much discussion on this forum related to exhaust options over the years. I have just uploaded a video on Youtube which hopefully accurately reveals the sound of my new system:

    {The 2nd half of the video has less wind noise (lower speeds). Overall I think my old 2nd generation GoPro still works well.}
    Anyway...

    I really wanted to open up the exhaust to hear that classic V12 wail, and I'm quite happy with the results. The manifolds are the stock originals. I used Summit Racing's universal narrow X-pipes (SUM-643122) on each side then straight pipes to Supersprint rear sections. I'll take pictures the next time the car is on a hoist (I forgot after install :/). I was worried about a "tinny" sound with the stainless system (X-pipes are mild steel), but thankfully it still has a deep tone.

    The maximum rpm in this video was about 5000. I still don't trust everything so I haven't convinced myself to stretch it further lol. Even so, the sound has characteristics of the old 512S which I heard at LeMans years ago. I also like the "pops" on the over-run but this may not be to everyone's taste. It isn't very loud at idle but really starts to "wail" at around 3500rpm. I can't believe these had 8 mufflers when new, 4 would have been a nice compromise in my opinion. For now, I am very happy with my "open" system...

    I still plan to post results of a mechanical oil pressure gauge test over the next few weeks. You'll understand that the exhaust sounds were my first priority lol :)...

    1971 365 GTC/4 with straight pipes all the way to the resonators. Got tired of the low ground clearance with the Quicksilver SS mufflers and was surprised at how little difference it made in sound once I took them off.
    I know.... different car ..... but thought you'd enjoy hearing the car with the straight pipes. No drone, not noisy at all. I have a friend with a Daytona and the same set-up.

    That's essentially what I have. Straight pipes to the resonators (including an X-pipe on each side to run as 2 straight sixes). Yes, your car sounds great!

    I realize that it's difficult to describe sound verbally, but is it possible to explain what difference X-Pipes would make?

    I have one on my Maserati GT and it certainly sounds fabulous.

    I'm in the club of having straight pipes to the resonators, although mine are small ones just forward of the rear wheels. I did have straight pipes for a while but it was just a little too much (for my neighbors):

    I'm not a race engine builder however my understanding is that X-pipes have a scavenging effect on the exhaust gasses. One exhaust pulse helps pull the next pulse, etc. Also prevents pulses from "headbutting" (I have no better term at the moment lol) at a bottleneck. My Quattroporte 4.7 GTS has one as well as my Corvette track car. The Corvette has been modified quite heavily and subsequent dyno tuning showed the positive effect of the X-pipe. As far as the 400i goes, you really don't want the engine running as 4 - 3 cylinders but rather 2 - straight 6 cylinders. I'm sure the more technically minded can and to this...
    Best,
    Jeff
