New surprised Mondial owner....

    Bid on a cheap Mondial (doubt if there is such a thing) as a dare on ebay, two hours later found I had bought my first Ferrari.... For less than £7000.
    Has many of the little niggles mentioned on this superb site, sticky windows, sunroof, iffy electrics on air con .... but makes a super noise and has full service history, and only 45K miles.
    All very exciting.
    Now all I need is a replacement alternator!

    You can rebuild those. Sounds like a Mondial 8

    I'm happy for ya :) Mondials are a gearhead's dream. Just giggle everytime you fix a niggle (while pocketing the labour costs), I did.

    Good luck! Lots of advice on here and being in UK lots of spares support too. Get local people to rebuild the alternator, just dont tell them whats it off! (I said a boat and about 4 yrs ago it was £60) I bought in 1999, cheap car needing work and yes it needed work and no it was not cheap!!! Huge grin still happens so all good in the end. Have fun with it and post some pics when you can, any advice......shout!

    Can't seem to put up the pics for some reason, but the alternator will be off tomorrow, and down to the repair shop...

    Rupert, congrats on the car. I had an '84 Mondi QV for several years. All I can say is "great car"!! Take your time on fixing things, and the car will pay you back with unending days of driving pleasure.

    One suggestion -- if you have the metric wheels, consider getting a set of Superformance 16" replacements and good tires. That made a huge difference on mine when I did it, both in handling and ride quality. Also, clean up all the ground connections, and remove the cut-off switch in the negative ground cable near the battery. That old switch gets corroded, and the lack of a good ground there causes all sorts of other problems in the car. I just by-passed the switch and ran a new ground cable from the negative battery terminal directly to the chassis. Just doing that fixed my starter problems and made the windows work better too.

    Thanks for the welcome and kind comments everyone,

    I dropped the o/s wheel and inner wing to find the alternator spinning fine, and the belt disintegrated - I had assumed that the alternator had seized... but hopefully just the belt.

    Steve, I'll take not and replace the main switch with a normal racing switch. See how that helps, alsoa big can of electric contact cleaner seems to be the most useful tool!

    Nice cheap entry to Ferrari Ownership, I have a suggestion looking at the Ebay pictures. The rubber trim at the rear of the roof looks uneven, like its got small bulges in it, what it will be though is probably heavy rust blisters under the rubber trim. Take the rubber trim off to confirm and then clean the rust of, use rust treatment on what is left and then coat in waxoyl and put the trim back. The centre black trim comes off by undoing the ten mill nuts from inside the car, just remove the rear roof trim bits to see them.
