As many know i have my Editorial Assistant, Carlin Thudpuppy assisting my efforts to remain sane around this place. Aparantly the task of listening to me was too much and he had to hire an assistant too... Lucy has joined the team as of this weekend.

She is also a Rescue from Lexeeslegacy.com the same place where Carliin was rescued.
They contacted me on the weekend and they have truck loads of dogs coming in from Katrina's wrath. Most are going to be housed via SPCA shelters and associate shelters and the primary task is to reunite the dogs with their owners. The shelter system in DFW was already pretty much full so if you can help or want a friend like one of my staff here please contact Lexeeslegacy.com or SPCA DFW

    Here are the kids...

Lucy is beautiful. The work the folks are doing is outstanding. During times like last week, the silent voice is so often not heard nor considered important by many. Thank goodness for the organizations that get in there and assist with these silent victims.

Jim, thanks for caring for Carlin Thudpuppy and friend Lucy. God bless you.

United Animal Nation, operating under the EARS program has been working with shelters and has volunteers from 50 states willing to assist with the displaced animals of all kinds. Here's their updated bulletin as of 9 am 5 September. www.uan.org

    EARS Update

EARS continues to operate an animal shelter in Monroe, Louisiana, which is housing, among others, pets belonging to evacuees who are staying at a shelter nearby. Effective Saturday evening, EARS assumed the lead role at the pet friendly shelter in Jackson, Mississippi and more than a dozen EARS volunteers along with National Director Kay Mayfield have arrived to assist. The shelter is housing a combination of animals (dogs, cats, horses, others) belonging to evacuees at the nearby shelter and animals rescued from points south.

An update on UAN's partner, Code 3 Associates - the State of Louisiana asked to send Code 3's massive animal disaster response unit into Gonzalez, LA, the major staging area for animals rescued from the hardest hit areas. The truck left the EARS Monroe outpost yesterday afternoon bound for Gonzales.

UAN continues to coordinate response efforts with several other organizations providing animal disaster relief - including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Colorado-based Code 3 Associates, the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Humane Association. Daily conference calls and in-field meetings are occuring between these organizations.

Please keep checking this Action Report for more details. If you are an EARS volunteer and have not yet informed us of your availability and skills, please do so now by clicking the appropriate link below in the "Contacts" section. We will be using information gathered through this process to mobilize volunteers and anticipate activating more volunteers imminently.

    SHELTER INFORMATION:
We are maintaining a downloadable/printable list of all temporary animal shelters that we hear about in the affected areas. If you become aware of any shelters that are accepting animals, please forward the information to [email protected]. Download the current information [here].

    REPORTING LOST ANIMALS:
We are collecting rescue requests from evacuees and others who are unsure of the whereabouts of their animals. Those requests are daily being compiled with requests reported to other organizations with whom we are coordinating to form a master database. Once teams are deployed, these requests will be forwarded to those in the area who can perform rescue efforts. Submit an online form with necessary information [here].

    PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE:
We know that so many people are struggling to cope with the unknown status of their animals and ultimately mourning their deaths. If you or someone you know need to talk with someone, please call the Pet Loss Support Hotline run by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The toll-free number is (800) 565-1526 and there are people to answer the line everyday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm PST. The school has added weekend shifts and will secure extra help over the next few weeks to staff the hotline, who will be instructed on dealing with victims of disasters. Another good pet loss support resource is the pet bereavement forum at iVillage.

Here's another place to help with the effects from Katrina:

Safe Havens and Veterinary Services Needed for Hurricane Katrina's Equine Refugees
Place Your Facility on the USEF Hurricane Equine Relief List
(Lexington, KY) - As Americans view the newscasts of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina it is clear that both humans and animals require immediate emergency relief from not only official agencies but from the generosity of individuals. If you have a facility or pasture which you can offer to house refugee horses and ponies, victims of Hurricane Katrina, please email your name, address, phone number and email address to [email protected] , or at 859-225-6993, (please email if at all possible as we expect a heavy load of calls.) If you can volunteer veterinary services please submit your contact information. The USEF is posting a listing by state of these safe havens for horses and ponies on our website. The list will be accessed by going to www.usef.org, on the right side of the homepage click on Hurricane Katrina Equine Relief. It is expected to serve as a master list to help horse owners in Katrina's path find help. Other equine organizations wishing to assist the effort and link to the list should also email [email protected]. We urge the participation of anyone who has the space, veterinary expertise and tenderness of heart to help these equine refugees.
