I am picking up my first Ferrari, a 88 Mondial Cab on Monday. I am wondering amout the proper way to shift the car. Some say it is important to shift a higher RPM's and some say to shift at lower RPM's simular to a regular car. I am also wondering what to treat the seats with. The interior, leather is perfect now and I want to keep it that way. Currently I use Lexol on my BMW seats and it dosent seem to keep the leather soft. Does anyone have a better product?

Congratulations & Welcome. Ferraris are small displacement engines so if you want to go fast you need high RPM. Ferrari engines do not like driving about at very low RPM & make sure you dont "ride" the clutch in traffic as that will kill the clucth quickly

When the engine is cold, shift from 1st to 3rd and skip 2nd gear altogether. When the oil temp gets off the peg, start using 2nd.

For the leather, use Leatherique. Click on the 'Sponsors' link for details. Be sure to get the Ferrarichat discount!

Congratulations on the new Mondial. And Welcome to Fchat!

Leather: I alternate between Lexol, and Griots Garage Leather Rejuvinator.

Shifting: Stay under 3000 RPM until the car is warm. Once the car is warm, I like to shift at at least 4-5000 rpm. It really depends on what traffic around you is like. You'll notice the car sounds and runs better at high RPM's.

    Good Luck,
    Dom

Warning, warning! Do NOT use Armorall in your Ferrari! Do NOT use silicone-based products around the interior of your Ferrari. See numerous posts about "melting" black plastic components. Just in case you didn't know.

Shift under 4k rpm until the oil temp reaches 170 degrees is the common wisdom, on shifting. You might even shift first to third, skipping second when cold, as Ferrari transmissions can be rather balky when cold....

Do treat the leather once or twice per year...any of the dedicated leather products, should be fine, Griot's, leatherique, connelly, zymol, just besure and do it.

You & me both Ron. I've used Lexol forever & agree it is a light product. My car is coming in Monday 30. I also would like to hear about the preferred product.

First Welcome to Ferrarichat and the world of Ferrari.

Second...There are members of this board who know more about Ferraris than you can ever imagine. They are wonderful people who will help you in any way they can. They also don't get enough PRAISE from the average folk like me. (THANK YOU!!!)

Feel free to check the massive amount of information just by using the search thingy.

    Hello to all.....
This is the first "chat" that I have ever tried. I am extreemly pleased with the replys and information that you provided. It is confirmed that Wednesday is the day. My wife and kids are excited as I am as this has been a dream of ours for quite some time.

Currently, we have a '82 Fiat Spider 2000 that has treated us very well for the past ten plus years, however, the boys - 6 and 8 are getting to big for the small back seat. We are looking forward to enjoying the Mondial and they are looking forward to having a bit more room and safety.

The Mondial is nearly perfect, extreemly well maintained and documented. It's red over black with 7 thousand miles on the odometer. I spoke with the previoius owner and he found it to be a great car with no problems or issues.
I am very interested in learning more about the proper ways of maintaing and caring for the car and look forward to learning from you all.

The last service was completed by Ferrari of Long Island two years ago. It was the 15 K completed because of time not miles. The car has been driven only 500 miles since. I have been told that the car is now due for the 30 K service again due to time not milage and plan on having this done over the winter.

In addition to learning more about the propper ways to maintain and drive the car, I am interested in knowing more about the winter storage procedure. Any help here would be great.

Again, I appreciate your welcolmes and info.

    - Ron

I second that recommendation....search the archives. There is a TON of information out there including answers to your questions. I spent a good couple of months sifting through the archives before making my purchase. Well worth the investment of time (at least 10x worth)!

    Ron,
Just bought my 328 from Ferrari of Long Island - never saw it in person. Its so hard to do this long distance thing & it involves a lot of trust. They say my car is perfect. Let me know any secrets passed on to you as how to keep it that way.
