Looking good Jon! What is the source for the bumper rubber, Cicognani? I have given up on my quest for the "L" bumpers, so we are modifying proper bumpers to the configuration of 206/L series. Cut, pound here and there, weld back to the narrow version. Regards, Alberto
The bumpers were a very interesting project! The bumpers were original to the car as far as I know and the rubber was very old and cracked. I ordered 206 bumper rubber from CICO but it didn't fit as it was too narrow and left space showing. This was the same rubber I used on Davids stainless steel bumpers on his 206 and the rubber fit fine. I contacted Cico and they had no rubber that was the same as the rubber I took off. I don't know if my 206 being the 18th produced might of had slighly different bumpers compared to the later 206 bumpers. I ended up modifying 246 bumper rubber and now it looks exactly like the rubber that came off. It's a conundrum!!
Thank you Jon, very interesting! How come David's car had stainless bumpers? Did he have them made, I assume, as that would not be original, right? Regards, Alberto
I'm down to last few parts to restore and I'm ready to start assembly. The problem is that I've has my car at Brad's for over a year waiting in line. I keep slipping in someone else's Dino and mine goes to the back of line. We went through the same exercise, had to narrow the gap about 1/8" when welding the backing strip back in (the 206/L-series bumpers are a very different construction to M/E-series). Cicognani don't have the right stuff but we stuck with it, I also noticed the old original rubber had shrunk slightly and gone hard and theirs was basically the same size so it's possible they mastered it on the shrunken rubber... My car didn't have the original bumpers with it, so we found 4 original 206 bumpers, Keith found me a good pair of rears in Italy a few years ago, I found 1 front in Italy and Max sold me an extra set of rears. They were alot of work. Regards, Andrew
The 206 has sort of been on the back burner as far as paint and body and metal work as I've been putting other cars in front of mine. Finally I've moved it in line and now with all the metal work done it's full speed ahead. Grigio Ferro Metallizzato. I have a question for the 206 experts out there. My grille had no black strakes as I've seen in all other Dinos. As far as I can tell this grill has not been taken apart but I'm sure someone here can give me an answer. This Dino is the 18th. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Jon, normally the 206 GT had black strakes originally. You can never be 100% sure but I doubt your grill strakes haven`t been black original. Attached a picture of untouched #00116. Regards Matthias Image Unavailable, Please Login
My 206 is now moving along and the color will be Grigio Notte Metallizzato. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Body is moving along and what a difference from where I started. The color is picked and the spray out done. Grigio Notte Mettallizzato it will be with charcoal carpeting from Henk and a bit non standard interior with dark red leather seat inserts, door panels and firewall. Jon: I think that on a 206, the gas tanks are painted black. Also, I remember a cutaway of a 206 GT which had the brake calipers painted gold and not silver. Please check with Matthias or one of the other 206 owners. Looking great...Keith
Yes, gas tanks originally black and same through L-series. That cutaway drawing showed gold calipers but this was a mistake I think, there was a discussion on that a few years back. All early brakes were a more dull silver - seen on the spacer block faces after splitting them. I redid mine in clear CAD which is what the plater told me it was. Great project Jon, good to see it moving.
Yes, the gas tanks were black but I'm debating whether I want mine black. I always take a few liberties!
As you should - it's your car. Keep up the great work. Thanks to Andrew for clarifying that the caliper finish should be silver and not gold. That cutaway diagram misled me. Cheers, Keith
No worries, it was in the forefront of my mind as I just picked them up this morning from the platers ... again. First go around the plating reacted with contaminants in the porous casting, second time they were chemically stripped, light bead blast to close the pores, then plate a base metal, flash nickel (I think) and then clear cad. Left them for a month to make sure it didn't happen again. Not sure it's worth all the hassle compared to zinc. Jon, do you do these in zinc?
My 206 is now in it's first coat of high build primer. Moving along! I'm doing Grigio Notte Metallizzatto which is a little darker than Argento. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Jon, I don't think 206's had a paper windshield from the factory. Shawn P.S. - I can't wait to see color.
Spray out of Grigio Notte Metallizzato which is the final color choice. Image Unavailable, Please Login
