Hey guys out there, I am a new member and do not currently own a Ferrari. I have an E-class Benz for the Kids, and also have a West Coast Chopper. I am finally at the stage in my life, where my wife will actually consider letting me buy a sports car. I grew up always wanting a Testarossa but at the grand ol age of 31 (and being the new millenium) that style just seems so outdated. I am looking at buying a 550 maranello in the next year or so....I am a fairly astute mechanic and have built many choppers in my life. My brain keeps on telling me to buy a friggin 911, but my heart has always yearned for a Ferrari. Any ideas?

If you want higher reliability and would like to get more than nine miles to the gallon, get the 911. It won't be a Ferrari V12 though, that's for certain. Test drive a 550 and see if it speaks to your soul or not. When faced with the reality of one of Enzo's progeny, the experience seems to either be love or hate, but not many are indifferent.

TR and 550 are very different animals. Mid-engined, '80s style and raw versus front-engined luxurious GT. Some people think the TR is an emerging classic, so don't dismiss it for its age. Both cars are old or getting old.

Being a mechanic, you may find the TR has more bits you can work on yourself -- fewer computers.

I sold my 911/993 and went with a 328. There really is zero comparison between the cars. The Ferrari looks/sounds are intoxicating. Just be prepared to pay attention to your car -- they demand it.

Thank you guys for the helpful tips...I am currently reviewing the history of 550 posts/responses on the website. Completely freakin awesome man! Having a love for motorcycles since a young age (actual rode one before a bicycle!!) I had always put off my love for the TR and other Fcars to concentrate on repairing motorcycles. I did this throughout college and medical school because they were so much cheaper. After getting into high end Choppers later in life (100K plus) I finally realized hey, what the heck am I doing wasting that much on a friggin motorcycle? Your website and good fortune has once again inspired me back on the track of Fcars. Reading some of the posts I actually BELIEVE that I can work on an Fcar. I was always destined to own a Ferrari, and will in the future. You people have empowered and educated me, and I appreciate you for that.

While TR fans will toss off the 550 as "front engine", remember that the 550 has a rear transaxle, giving it the basic layout of the 365 Daytona. The weight distribution is still even, but less centralized. That makes the 550 slower to rotate which can be either good or bad, depending on if you intended to rotate. :p

The 550's turn-in won't be as crisp, but it won't be as inclined to spin, either, making it a little more docile at the limits. Theoretically. Both are well refined implementations, so it'll take a pretty critical driver pushing them on a track to find fault with either.

And that's typically where the 911 and Ferraris differ: You'll usually run out of talent before the Ferrari does. ;)

And the Mona Lisa has no eyebrows. :p
