I am going to be spending 6 months to one year in Toronto on a long term business deal that may lead to me moving to Toronto. As I am an Atlanta (Georgia-USA) boy I am a bit anxious about the change in climate, culture, etc.

Can some of you Canada/Toronto people give me some pointers about what to expect up there in the great white north? I am not big into cold and have heard some things that make me worried about moving there full time, to wit:

1.) Housing costs in Toronto are very high.
    2.) Gas costs are high
3.) Insurance costs are very high on cars. (I have a 360 and TR)
4.) No interest deductions on mortgages

What kind of cost of living adjustment should I need to make things equal? i know the Canadian dollar is less than US dollar but I get the feeling that general cost of living is quite high. Any comments?

Also can somebody give me some advantages to Toronto? I am sincere about this question--What can I look forward to? I am looking at living in the Yonge and Eggleton area.

    Thanks for your input.

    You mean Yonge and Eglinton?
If you live in the core and work in the core you won't need to drive. Don't want to drive UNLESS you can time your hours so your not stuck in too much traffic. Like any large city gridlock can be nasty. You'll enjoy your F-car's for off hour and weekend jaunts. Prices are no more than any other large city. Depends on what you want to live in and what your used to paying.
Where are you coming from? I assume Georgia. We get a little colder for a longer period of time than your used to. You will not be driving your F-car from late November until late April (earliest?).
I think you'll find most Canadians pretty friendly (not as outgoing as Americans but we warm up fast). The bigger problem is the size of the city. People you meet can live 1hr to 1.5hrs away so it makes socializing a little difficult. Gas prices are a bit higher than US but not by a lot. If your paid in US dollars and living in Canada then you'll have change left over from most of your purchases. While we do not have severly run down area's like some of the larger US cities we do have some unfriendly area's. I believe the Jane-Finch corridor is probably the worst. Perhaps some current locals can speak for this (I left TO 15 yrs ago). Lots of good places to eat. Lots of theatre downtown (Front St.). Post your preferences and I'm sure we can point you in the right direction. Enjoy the experience. Let F-chat know when you get there. I'm sure some of the folks will be happy to help you out.

Expect your wallet to be alot lighter at the end of the year due to taxes. Also expect to pay insanly high housing costs for basicly a closet with a window and a sink. Anything around the 300k mark in the surrounding area will get you a 1 car garage and about 1700sft of living space..in other words..terriable. Propperty taxes are very high in the city..expect 3-4k per year. Basicly do everything you can to stay were you are.

The cold anit that bad..but in the city because your so close to the lake it can get to be quite damp and the windchill will go right through you. -30 is not unheard of with the windchill. Summer as crazy hot sometimes with temps reaching close to 40 degrees celcious.

The club district in TO is one of the best in N/A. All kinds of stuff happening everyweekend..and if your a singal guy..Canadian girls kick ass.

Given your background I am assuming that you will be working primarily in Markham which is just north of the city. It is bordered by many highways and can have you downtown in 20 minutes. There is an abundance of real estate there and living costs will definatly be lower than in the city core. With regards to cost of living, I do not consider it particularly high. Naturally there is a value to knowing where to buy things which is no different than the local knowledge available anywhere else. Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you are looking for any more info. I'm always glad to help someone in my field.

Brian, welcome to Toronto. You will be surprised by how friendly everyone is. Toronto is one of the biggest multicultural centre's in the World therefore we can be so bad ;)

If you choose Yonge and Eglinton that is a great start to enjoying the city. Parking sucks but there are always options. From there you can easily access the 401 or even the DVP (If you love traffic then pic DVP, it ain't called the Don Valley PARKway for nothing)

Tom is right, it's cold here, VERY cold. But what are you gonna do? As for entertainment I can go on forever! For starters Yonge and Eglintion is great for shopping, food, entertainment and lots lots more. You are also a 7-10 minute drive to downtown Toronto.

I can write forever.....We truly have everything here and what I wrote is not even 1%.

If you ever have any questions please feel free to PM me anytime.

Welcome to Toronto....welcome to Canada eh.

If you are living in downtown Toronto, I'd say your F-Car will be parked from December until late March. Other than that, the weather is generally F-Car friendly. There can be a lot of rain in November and April, but fortuantely F-car's ARE waterproof.

i dunno about that, if you have a short drive to work, n really want to you can take your car. my dad does it with our maser quite often. i make sure to rinse off the salt every 3 days and give it a good wash every sunday. if you plan to, i would advise investing in some pirelli snow tires. they work wonders. n if you take it easy, you can drive it all year around. but then again, to each is own.
