    Hi all,

I am pretty new on the board. I joined a while back but had some time away to cool my jets on getting a new car haha. I have looked at many different Ferrari's and decided that I like the TR best. Well actually the 512TR but I think I will start smaller and maybe one day build up. I am by no means wealthy but in the next five to seven years plan to get a TR. I would like to learn as much as I possibly can before I purchase my toy. Like I said I have a while until I pull the trigger but during that time I want to learn as much about it as possible so as to be able to care for it in the way that she deserves. If any of you could maybe point me in the right direction that would be great. I not only want to learn but experience it so if there are any ferrari get togethers or things of that nature. I am going to continue to read this thread and I am sure that I will learn a lot in the future. Thank you all in advance.

    Dusty

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Welcome to the TR section.

....ignore the boxer girls....they squeal too much. :D

If you just read page after page of the TR section, it will take you to many various subjects on our beloved TR's.

With the search, you have to be looking for something specific.

You could start a search with a " TR fuse box thread" or if you really want to go nuts, do a search on "when should I change my timing belts....if ever"

...just kidding about the "if ever" part.

    Dusty,
    Welcome.
First thing after tearing though this site is to find a mechanics you can rely on. Someone that knows TR and whom you can talk to.
Also get money in the bank in order to cover the "OMG, no, not now" incident that could/will happen just a little while after you've bought your new toy.
OR get a TR with a major to be done right after your purchase.
With experience I suggest that second option.
    Just my 2 cents...

Buy a well maintained car with records, pay cash for it , do not defer maint. , and keep a spare $20K in the bank for the unexpected. Do all of this and you will be fine.

Two absolute items necessary for Ferrari ownership.....A big bottle of aspirin & a big bank account.....Why wait, with prices at an all time low across the board, your best chance at a "reasonable purchase price", would be "NOW"......"He who hesitates is Lost".....or at least doesn't own a Ferrari......Mark.

This pretty much says it all.
If you are faint-at-heart writing a 10k check for maintenance this may not be for you.
If you are a good mechanic, get the books and manuals and take the time to learn this car you can avoid the 10k check most of the time.

NOW is the time to buy. You just need to weed out the dogs and look for a good car with a motivated seller..
You'll never see prices better than it is right now

    Hey Dust.

Firstly, I'm with you. I'm also in the throws of research. More on my import options and price, but also on what to look out for.

This forum is full of great people willing to help out. There are lots of recent threads asking your same question so using the search is also a good option, but there is never any harm in introducing yourself and your intentions.

To be honest, In recent weeks I have been having thoughts of leaving this plan till later in life.

Every time I think that, someone tells me, un-prompted, of some news that pushes me BACK to wanting the TR to happen THIS year.

I'm still weighing up my options to be honest, but the "wait till later in life" thing brings up some questions.

    1) Will there BE any good TR's left in say 8 years?
    2) What will the price be on those that ARE left?

I think for ALL sports cars, from Japs to exotics, we are living in a rare time where the "Good" cars of yesterday, are still available today, and at prices that the average Joe CAN afford IF he backs his purchase up with careful research.

    I remember a time when I could buy a perfect 1955,56, 57 Chevy for 5 or 6k.
I was too broke so I could only buy the drivers for 1 or 2k.
They made hundreds of thousands of these cars, not many around now.
Look at what they are selling for now.

Only 7,000+ TR's built, you do the math.

When making the decision to buy, the words "logical purchase" and "necessary" go out the window. It's an exotic car, not a household expense or requirement.

A lady once asked me, "How can you afford a car like that?!"
    I told her, "I don't own a boat".
....(or a motorhome, or snowmobiles, or an airplane etc...)

    ..meaning, what are your priorities?

If you want the dream, how ever little it is, you are going to have to focus on that dream and make the sacrifices to get it.

Down the road when the country escapes the Governmental choke hold it's in right now the money may come easier but the prices will be much higher.

The TR is a great choice. Unique and stunning style that holds it's own against any car on the road today. You will get that legendary mid-engine 12-cylinder layout that is prominent amongst the highest performers in history. Best part is that Ferrari planned on making lots of them so alot of the exotic bugs (overheating engines, cramped cabins, etc.)were worked out. Another benefit of the production numbers is that you get all this greatness at a very reasonable price. Some caveats: underpowered brakes, starter solenoid issues, tune-up costs.

I have absolutely no regrets because I know that if I didn't own one, I'd be dreaming about it all the time. Good luck

    I completely agree 100%

When I tell people what I'm thinking about buying they look at me with that "as if" look on thier faces.

But like wise.... I dont have a boat, or a bike, or a massive house

we dont go out much. Dont drink much at all. And through most of life, except for the house, we have lived "credit free". Saving for what we want in favour of taking out loans we can't pay back.

THOSE are the reasons why we now have a nice house, with a nice pool, and 2 nice cars, and no debt except $140,000 mortgage on a $550,000 house.

There is no place to put a "Chip" on a Pre-1992 TR because they use Bosch CIS injection which does not function like the later Electronic Fuel Injection that was used on the 512TR and 512M. Those DO use computers but I have never heard a "chip" for these to upgrade performance.

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Bawhahahahaha

    ....or a wife ! :D

    ....or had a divorce !

I really think you need a Ferrari !

If you're financially fine....the time is now! There will always be a million reasons on why NOT to do something. Don't let the time pass and have memories of regret.

This isn't like getting married. If you really don't feel it's for you...you can always sell...small loss sure...but not like 1/2 ! (divorce )

Be forewarned, once you buy it and have that first long drive....YOU WILL SAY...."why didn't I do this sooner"

Just keep doing your research. Ask any question here....we're all here to help.

    ....just don't wait too long.

....and NO car is perfect (well, except mine :D )....so don't get hung up on a small issue here or there....go for the overall condition and a PPI .

    Yep I know I know.

To be honest, I've been woken up in recent years by hearing stories of young people loosing thier lives to this or that.

Makes me realise how much of life we waisrt because we THINK we've still got time to live our dreams.

    But we simply never know.

    The time IS now.

And it IS the car for me. My father in law asked "why do you have to buy THAT car?"

I pointed at his wife and asked "Why did you have to marry THAT woman?"

He understood that it's not always 100% based on logic but on just KNOWING what you want and going after it.

Five years from now people will be looking back, "Jeez, they were giving them away", (and not just TR's, look at 360's and 550's right now).

Not too long ago it was rare to see good 512TR's or 550's below 100k.
