Hundreds of Historic Racecars to Compete June 6-8 at IMS - Indianapolis 500 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway Finally a reason to return to the speedway, looks like it could be a great event.
hopefully lots of stuff comes out to play from the speedway museum and various other collections in Indy
The Speedway has asked and gotten SVRA to dedicate a race group for cars special to the Speedway, with significant import. It's going to be awesome!
Could someone describe what the fencing is like around the GP track. I would love to photograph the track action if the fence is similar to Daytona and Sebring where one can see over the fence for an unobstructed view.
it's standard FIA fencing, 12 feet high. without a photo credential, your best bet is to go to oval turn 4 high enough to view over the fence. bring a high powered lens
The fence around thr GP track is about 8-10 feet tall, kind of like in inner fence at Road AMERICA. There are some grandstands around for a better view, and I think a few photo holes in the fence. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info An unobstructed view would certainly make for some epic pictures. There is only so much one can do shooting through a fence If they allow garage access to see the cars getting worked on like the recent Rolex 24 that would be a plus. Either way it will be an awesome event for spectators.
Good lord, I'm not going if there aren't any yellow shirts. I just wouldn't feel safe without a whistle being blown at me constantly.
my favorite yellow shirt moment: I was at the Speedway for a mid-week practice day for the 500 in 97 or 98...you know, the darkest years of the IRL. there was literally nobody there, it was definitely a "more participants than spectators" day. I decided to go check out the museum because nobody was on track. as I approached, there were no fewer than a dozen yellow shirts camped out doing "crowd control". I walked through one of the entrances, toured the museum for 30 or 45 minutes, and went out. as I was walking out an ancient yellow shirt stopped me and said "son, you know when you went in the museum you walked through an exit only door". I looked around at the complete lack of spectators and said "sorry, didn't mean to mess up the traffic flow". he looked at me like I had just told a supreme court justice to screw himself. hilarious. and the Speedway wonders why everyone thinks they're stuck in the past
Solid story, and quite the typical yellowshirt encounter. I had one of the ancients insist that my parking pass was invalid 2 years ago for Grand Am weekend. Resulted in a call to the Yellow Shirt counsel, and I was deemed worthy of the infield after about 15 minutes. The number of golf carts involved with this was just hilarious.
