Hello Brotherhood, I am considering a new set of wheels for my 94 348 Spider and I see two options for lips on the vendor site. One is listed as rears, Ferrari Disc 1.0 inch lip, 10.5 inch width, and the other _ 1.5 inch lip, 9.5 inch width. So the bigger lip is a narrower wheel on the rear. That seems strange. Also, the fronts come up default as 1.5 lip, 8 inch width, _ 1.0 lip Ferrari Disc, 8.5 inch width, but I don't really care so much about that. I imagine that the "Ferrari Disc" listing is to clear the brake calipers and discs right? I would be happy to go with the Ferrari Disc width and lip, wider tire and corresponding fender alignment, unless the wider lip gives me a wider stance within reason. But then the wider tire could be fine also. I'll check with the vendor in the meantime. These are the OZ Superleggera IIIs
OK, after a busy day with rowdy kids at work, I was able to chat with the vendor. Good news. The Ferrari Disc spec with 1 inch lip is a wider wheel in both instances and provides a wider stance. The offset is greater by 6mm in the rear and even though I have a late 1994, that may be just enough to go flush with the wheel well and not go over like happens with the 360 Starfish wheels when uncut. Offset did not change between narrow wheel 1.5 lip and wider wheel 1 lip on the fronts. I am pretty psyched right now and can't wait to get these special ordered. Maybe 4 to 6 weeks delivery and probably winter storage of the car at home. Second set of calipers for Giallo paint next year. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ordered. (Gulp!) 3-4 weeks on the forged centers from OZ. Not long after that delivered to me. Hopefully no snow until after. I'll try to take pics. 1.0 inch Ferrari disc lip is the wider wheel option and will provide a slightly wider stance. 18s.
LOL, you're right. It was ms paint even I'm keeping my originals. I jus got tired of the searching and fussing for anything approaching Speedline Challenge wheels. I can dial down the perches a bit but even now, I have to use a board to get in and out of my driveway. Now I'll be searching for another set of brake calipers but may end up going with a Brembo or Stop Tech kit. Want to have yellow calipers but that will take time.
I'm also looking at those same wheels for my 348 Spider, unsure about the look. So if you want to be the Guniea pig, I may just hold out for some 360 modular or star fish.
Sure, I am the guinea pig. All this time I was trying to figure out which model the modulars came from. I didn't try very hard but the machining was just one more thing to deal with. I got some wheel spacers from another member here and one adapter bolt was missing and they still didn't fit right with the stock bolts on top. The smaller spacers were still too big for the fronts anyway. 94s don't need the large ones in back. But these should still be Superleggera, and I like that. Anyone have the weights of stock and 360s?
Here are some "mesh" wheels on a 348 Challenge at Tutto Italiano. It won for 348s. Not sure if they are Ferrari or aftermarket. Similar ones have been called aftermarket. These have smaller diameter centers and are less open than the OZs Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That car "won" what? A concours?? Was it even a factory challenge? By the way, those aren't factory wheels - challenge or otherwise. Here is a shot of challenge wheels on an actual 348 factory challenge car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, maybe not concours but it was at Larz Anderson Museum in Brookline Ma. It beat mine and another spider and a targa. I need to find a stock rearview mirror and detail my engine before the next one. Did some driving and then up to the show so it was a little dusty inside. Paint is killer and got many compliments. No word from judges. Rescue history may be a hindrance in the future. Had silly custom paint with dolphins and whatnot.
The wheels on that 348 look like BBS LM's. One of my favorites. Im thinking of putting some 19"'s on my 355...
19s?! Woah but do what you like. The 17s still had a bit of sidewall so I hope the 18s are just right. I scraped the front lip even with the board, backing out of the driveway with a buddy in the right seat. Dang street is crowded too semi urban and no one uses their driveway/garage but me and a couple other neighbors. Parking all over the street makes it hard to angle in and out. Poor me right?
Yeah cool. They look like a cross between 355, 512 TRs and a modular type. I respect the 5 spoke/star design of PF and Ferrari but The stock wheels are just too chunky, grab brake dust like a magnet and don't let you see the calipers at all. After seeing some later models with more open wheels that still had black calipers I may stay with that. I just bought a Bridg-it driveway curb bridge and the shipping was killer for that solid rubber. Heavy. It's 20 inches wide and I hope that's enough. My dang plywood contraption keeps snagging the AC condensor under panel and cracks off the vents and back angle. Fragil-ee! Thinking of other materials to use to substitute the panel. May piece together some vinyl or pvc.
OK got a text message from UPS and ran home early for lunch. Felt pretty good carrying inside. Maybe lighter than stock but larger too. Center caps tonight and mount if I can. I didn't fuss at all with the profiles and only made sure I ordered the Ferrari lip, which was more narrow, but with a wider wheel. I think the proportions are essentially stock with a little more profile on the staggered rears. Special thanks to Nick at the vendor. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. It' s funny, years ago when I got new wheels for my Miata, I was looking for a mesh design to emulate wire wheels but with a modern take. I couldn't find any in the size I wanted so I went with a classic five spoke instead. I'm glad I got them because a 5 spoke is really sporty. Now when I was thinking about new wheels for my 348, Challenge Speedlines would have been great but finding a good set at a reasonable price was hard. Then looking a adapting 360 wheels or others was going to be a hassle. Sure enough I found these on a major vendor and when we worked out the benefits of the Ferrari lip, it was pretty much a no brainer. In the end, the mesh or multi-spoke design was all I could find but I do like the way it works with the slat details all around the car. I don't think it's too busy and even has less spokes then a real mesh design like the BBS LMs. I want to be able to see the calipers and these do the job. I may even stay with stock black, but will try to find another set to paint Yellow. Giallo or another high temp yellow.
I think they are perfect.........never been a big fan of the stock 348 wheels......these will certainly give your Fcar a much more modern look and stance
Thanks Oengus. The 360 and 612 shots on the vendor site helped. They also had a 355 in the app so it was a close comparison. That's how I started my photoshop.
