I'm going to be traveling to SIN, and plan on taking the 18 hour 40 minute super long haul Singapore Airlines flight. The trouble is that it leaves at 23:00 and arrives at 6:40.

Between normal sleep, TV, alcohol and Ambien, I can't figure out how to plan this flight.

How does the flight crew do it? It's the longest single flight in the world.

Any help from experience would be greatly appreciated.

multiple flight crews is how they get by.

as for US-Asia flights there's no great method to dealing with the length and time change.

the best results i've had in preparing for the time change is handling the flight as follows:

    1) sleep late day of flight

    2) stay up as late as you can once aboard. boarding plus taxi takes 1 hour usually, then do all they offer, movies, books, food. longest i've made it after take-off is 6 hours which helps significantly.

    3) you'll fall asleep naturally and probably sleep 4-6 hours.

    4) now hit the ambien for 4-8 hours more sleep.

so on the short end of sleep you're awake with 4 hours left, on the long end of sleep you're awakening on landing (this feels like a huge victory).

once you're there get outside and enjoy the sun as much as you can. go walking or running, hit the coffee and avoid alcohol.

the 12-14 hour time change is the hardest one can experience. i've been to japan, china, hk, and all of south-east asia on many trips and its never an easy adjustment. if you want some insight watch Lost in Translation - anyone who's been to japan can relate.

I fly to Asia on a regular basis. Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. My longest leg is 16 hours when I do the Detroit to HK direct flight. I fly to Singapore through Narita arriving at 1AM. I try to avoid Ambien if I can. I just try to adapt to the destination time. I hope you can fly business class or first. It makes a world of difference for me especially being a bit older now. If you arrive in the morning, do your best to stay awake and sleep at the time you would normally got to sleep.

    Hope this helps!

Start shaving in the Asian time zone before you leave, adjust your watch to the Asian time zone as soon as you are in your seat and use the time on the plane following the destination time zone. Dont let the flight crew dictate eating time - follow the Asian time zone. And most important, dont go to bed when you arrive until the right time in that time zone

Thank you for the specific advice.

I've done the JFK to HGK 16:30 flight before, but it's timing was more sensible.

This is THE longest commercial flight:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_commercial_flight#Longest_non-stop_flights

The timing makes it a real challenge. If you board near midnight, and land near dawn, it makes it that much harder.

I have taken the SQ flight from Singapore to Newark. Always wondered what people in economy do, but realized it was all business class. Whole plane...

Slept for close to 10 hours, watched 4 movies, and ate 3 meals. At least the SQ food is Ok and the video collection is good.

I was in NY for 3 days and had to then fly to Beijing, so the easiest thing for me was to stay out in NY at night too. That way my body just stays on Asia time. It's easier for me than adjusting.

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I must adjust.

I have a full day schedule of events, and also some evenings. I need to be on my best game.

It's cool, isn't it, that the whole plane is business class?

I like the assumption that the deceased would be a passenger, given how young and healthy the stewardesses are!

No, but I'm not sure it helped. For me ambien wears off in 3-4 hours. If you have trouble sleeping on the plane you might want to bring something, though. It really took me a full day to get it together, I would give yourself a day to acclimate if you can. Now, coming home tomorrow is business class FTW!

Generally easier on me going home.. Just nap out of Tokyo, stay up when I get home.

    Business class it is, Howard.

Actually my question was specific towards bringing in Zolpidem into Singapore without declaring it as required.

Longest flight I was on non-stop was like 18 or 19 hours I think. South African Airways non-stop on a 747, ATL to Johannesburg...back in 2000 when they used to fly 747s and that route. The way back was terrible as we went from Cape Town to Johannesburg to Canary Islands to ATL...that was like 23 hours on the same plane. :(...at least I got to go in the cockpit that return flight to see a sunset over Africa. :) I got back home in FL at 4PM and went right to sleep waking up at 6AM the next day without waking up once and was back on track.

Wow. Singapore Airlines is wonderful. They make the trip a pleasure. I shouldn't have over-thought it, and just left myself in their care.

A picture from the entertainment screen, on the way home, about an hour from Newark:
(You know it's a long flight when the map shows all seven continents!)

Outstanding. I stayed at the Marina Bay Sands, and was chaperoned around to a number of private functions. I took the MRT a few times, which was the best subway I've ever been in.

I'm amazed at how new and growing everything is. It's absolutely booming.

It's not an easy city to get to from the US, but it's wonderful once you do arrive. The people are friendly, it's extremely clean and safe, the food is a wonderful pan-Asian blend.

I highly recommend Singapore for anyone looking for an Asian destination.

Glad you enjoyed it .. it's a very easy city to live in as you can imagine.

Did you manage to get to a hawker centre (outdoor local food centre) or try the famous Singapore chilli or pepper crab? They're worth the trip alone!

Wait till you see the tax system. Great if you are a high earner and an investor. Not so great if you like cars like us nut cases over here. That's where all the taxes flow back to the coffers!

I've seen it. And I might be planning my retirement, while keeping cars here in the US!

I do the direct flight from Los Angeles to Singapore several times a month. The flight is a business class only flight.

15-18 hours depending on which way you're going. I have never had issues on this flight. They have the best entertainment, food, and seating arrangements. You can plug all your phones, computers what not into the plane and watch it on your own 23 inch TV.

In addition, they provide wifi on the flight (not sure if you will be on the SQ34 flights). The price is a little high and really only for your phone to chat o text, bbm, or imessages. Cost are $10 for 15mb and $30 for 45mb (don't quote me on the exact data amounts but the price is right).

Movies are great and service is wonderful. There are worst flights to be on.
