I've read a few reports on New Zealand's economy recently, but I was just wondering from those who are there, what are the business sectors that are experiencing growth? Dairy aside, what are some of the industries that NZ is pushing for?

What is "hot" with consumers? Is there anything from the US that is in short supply?

One of my best friends moved back to Whangarei (after a few years in Auckland), and we've been discussing some business ideas, but I wanted to get some other opinions. I still dream about NZ almost weekly (night dreams, not just daydreams!).

Adventure tourism, eco-tourism, vine-yards, hospitality are huge industries. Health resorts are getting built everywhere and so are golf resorts. Tourism is nearly out-stripping dairy GDP - wise.

NZ is seen as a safe country from terrorism and more ex-pats are settling back here. (Although some mad Kiwi flight instructor almost flew into the Sky casino tower in Auckland at the start of the week, blaming his behaviour on relationship difficulties. Also last week when I was in Tauranga on business, an overseas person did a fake bomb scare over there so he could get deported free of charge. These are both very rare events)

We are at the end of the biggest property boom in decades. Land in some areas has gone up by over 80% in value in the last three years, especially in coastal areas, although demand is now levelling off and apartment rents in Auckland have dropped.

When the NZ dollar is low, we get lots of foreign students like Asians going to our English language schools and universities.

Surely you're not suggesting that Injektilo, Moretti, and Goober weren't that helpful?

IMHO, attempting to import US product into un zud would be very brave or very foolish - the dollar's too weak and there's already someone with the distribution channels set-up ready to cream any new craze. Focus on the eco-tours or perhaps you'd be better exporting kiwi wine. Besides, the 'research' required would ensure a good trip to un zud and plenty of enjoyable moments...

    well, from what i saw....

you could make a killing with traffic management... eg Palmerston North seems to create a bottleneck out of 10 cars with its crazy traffic light timing and sequence...

Umbrellas.... LOTS of umbrellas, they need umbrellas.

To be honest, I sped through from Auckland to Wellington in 7 days and didn't really explore/learn much as it rained nearly all the time.

Very pretty place, no people though. Like HELLOOOOOOOOO, where is everybody????
