Howdy Boys, I just purchased my first Ferrari. A 1979 Euro 308GTS. #28693. Single distributor,no smog pump, no cats, no charcoal vapor recovery canister, no "Slow Down" lights, Borla Exhaust, with all instruments in Italian and KPH. I love it. My question is: When replacing the CV Boots, which is the easier side to remove? I looked in the archives and learned you only have to drop one side of the axle to replace the boots. I was just wondering if one side was easier than the other. Inboard or Outboard?
    Thanks

If you need to replace the boot, I would not even think of doing it without removing the entire halfshaft. I did both sides and if you need the one boot as I did why not clean and repack the CV joint and if you do this on one side why not do it on both with new boots. The parts are cheap and it's just time and tons of rags and/or paper towels. A parts cleaning tray would make it so much easier

FYI, I took my CV joints apart to clean them - inner race(star looking), outer race and balls. Bit of a puzzel getting them back and they are a one way fit so look at the way they configured especially the inner star as one side is flat and the other has a slight shoulder.

Sounds like a great car, but how did you deal with the smog certificate situation?

Yes, remove entire half shaft and also change control arm inner suspension bushings at the same time.

They are not expensive, and easy to do, especially if you use the Energy Suspension poly bushings and just press them into the old outer sleeves. There are instructions someplace around here about doing it that way.

WOW! Thanks for the quick replies and experienced suggestions. I respect experience and will indeed remove the entire half shafts. If your gonna do it, might as well do it right. Well, I better get back to the T. Rutlands website and order the last two sets of CV bolts.
EUROGT4: Mohave County in the great State of Arizona does not require smog certs. My car had been out of registration in Colorado for 3 going on 4 years. Total fees for two years + a personalized plate in AZ...$88.00. In AZ your don't pay sales tax on the purchase price of the car. If I would of had to pay to register this car in CA., it would of probably solved their entire deficit problems!

Porsche CV boots fit and a lot cheaper '77-'84 911 Turbo boots, IIRC. About $5 each.

And if you have collector car insurance, you don't have to have it smogged anywhere in AZ.

Thanks for the tip Doug. Wish I would of posted before I bought my Boots for a $100. Thats what I mean by experience. I have my car insured with Hagerty for $35K at $435 per year.

I was with Hagerty for 10 years, then went to Grundy for a 50% savings in the annual rate. Now I pay less that your rate, for an '84 QV, in NYC.

I'm just saying, in case you feel like making a phone call.

When you do those boots, look here for threads on the subject. One think you'll want: very long 1/2" drive extensions.

Look up at the top of the page in the stickies for parts cross reference, and write the stuff down on one piece of paper as you find stuff you may need.

Porsche CV joints are the same also and a a lot cheaper.

And if your window channel fuzzy stuff needs to be replaced, mid 1960's Ford Fairlane stuff fits exactly, looks identical and is 1/10th the cost.

Valve shims, window switches, lots of things are identical and a lot less $$

In a great many cases, Ferrari seems to have used parts common to other vehicles.

Hope you have an Arizona D/L to go with that. If you get stopped, they will cite you and make you register it here. You know, the deficit thing.

No ADL. I have my Arizona ID card. I have a home and office in Arizona. I have my Arizona cars registered there and my California cars registered here. What was that Officer? Why is my Arizona Ferrari in California? Because that is where my mechanic is. I just don't let anyone work on my Ferrari. It has to go to the mechanic a lot.
Another great thing about Arizona, they don't give a rat's ass about what kind of license you have.
