Okay gentleman, so I read the thread for the newbies to post, so I will grow some and post this. I love ferraris but one question has boggled for me a little while. I know the cars and body styles and such but what I confuse all the time is this.

The terminology and things. Like meanings and why and where do the come why are they called this.

    I.e.

    Maranello
    Pinafirina
    Scagletti
    Scuderia

I think thats about it, I cant come up with anymore but if you guys can let me know.

    Welcome to the forum!
I would not say these are dumb questions.
Pininfarina is the design company Ferrari has used for their most popular designs. The also use Bertone occasionally though not recently.
Scaglietti is one of the more recent models and may transalte to mean some variant of coupe. This one I'm not too sure about.
The Scuderia is translated as the 'Racing garage' I beleive.
Maranello is the town in Italy where the final assembly of Ferraris takes place.
Modena is also a Ferrari assembly point I beleive and is the location of the Ferrari test track.
Enjoy the site and participate as much as you can.
    :)

And based on Seung posts being very limited I would not be put off by his response. Certainly not what I would expect from any Ferrari owners that I know.

I'm only an experienced newbie so anyone feel free to correct/add to this:

(Sergio) Pininfarina is the designer whose company became the dominant designer of Ferraris.

Scaglietti was the coachbuilder across the street - I believe Ferrari bought Scaglietti and thereby moved body assembly in house.

Maranello is the Italian city where the Ferrari factory is located.

"Scuderia Ferrari" is a reference to the Ferrari racing team. (EDIT: Not sure if it means "stable", "garage" or "team")

I think Scaglietti is the name of an old designer. Some of the other names are places, like Maranello.

    Close.

Scaglietti is in Modena and Ferrari purchased it in I believe 1969.

I have always been told scuderia is stables in much the same way a race horse is from "***** Stables".

IMHO- in my humble (or honest) opinion
    HTH- hope this helps
    IIFC- if I remember correctly

just a few I can think of- and welcome.

Post whatever question you like- but the search feature is a great tool for finding out things quickly. I use it all the time because it's faster than posting a question and waiting for a response. If I can't find the answer- that I post.

    Easy, huh?
You'll find the answer to most any Ferrari related question here.
There is also a search function, upper left corner of page, that works well for a lot of questions, but sometimes takes several 'search' word tries to find just what your looking for.
So which cars are you interested in? Or just all in general.
    Welcome, and enjoy Ferrari-chat.

A couple of others you may come across:

Fiorano - the Ferrari test track (and the town near Maranello it's in); also, the model name for the 599GTB, the newest 12 cylinder model.

Imola - the track where the San Marino GP is run. Before it was actually introduced, it was widely rumored that the 599 would carry this name.

    And some forum phrases:

    LOL - Laughing out loud
ROTFL - Rolling on the floor laughing
ROTFLMFAO - Rolling on the floor laughing my f****** ass off.

    Welcome

Giovanni Battista "Pinin" Farina was a designer and coachbuilder, Pininfarina, the company managed by his son Sergio, was and is a design, coachbuilding and manufacturing concern of still some note. ...Built the Alfa and FIAT spiders along with many low volume Ferraris through the sixties, they are still actively deisgning and building cars for a number of contremporary manufacturers. Designed both the Daytona and 246 Dino, and then the Camargue and the 599...

Scaglietti's shop mostly built, and now owned by Ferrari builds, Ferraris to PininFarin designs but he personally also designed the 250 GTO, iirc.

Maranello is the town in the province of Modena, Italy, from which all this good stuff propogates.

Scuderia means race team, as used. The "SF" in the increasingly misunderstood 'SF badges' was meant to indicate a factory team car.

Pininfarina (the design house, not the man) designed ALL the Ferrari road cars starting from the 250 Europa/375 America (these were sort of the first attempt at a production car) to the 599GTB, except for the 308GT/4 Dino and a few one-offs.

The Pininfarina designs were built by both Pininfarina and Scaglietti. Scaglietti typically built the sports/race
cars and berlinettas, while Pininfarina built the touring cars.

Your question causes me to comment on Ferrari's trend of naming current models after past glories. It smacks of a retro band playing its old hits but not generating anything new. Not a practice Enzo would have adopted, in my view. I guess we can look forward to 'Mondial: The Next Generation' or 'GTO Reddux-yet again'. Hmmm. At least the 'Daytona' nickname referenced something that was relatively current in the Ferrari legend.

Enzo was alive and kicking when the 288 GTO beared its namesake to the 250 GTO.
Why? Because its worthy of the name.
As long as the car can relate to its namesake somehow, or is worthy of it. Then I see no problem

However, Pontiacs GTO is a blatant retro sales tactic in the GTO namesake of the old pontiac GTO. The new GTO is a great car, but was an already existing/named car and really doesn't have any history w/ the old GTO. It's still a damn fine automobile for being a $30k domestic :D

And then, if it just sounds damn cool :D Like lambo has some pretty good names, ferrari too. The Italian's created a beautiful sounding language strictly for making the cars sound as sexy as they are in real life.

    -Ben Martin
