I suspect that there are no hard and fast rules, but when does a Ferrari become a "vintage" car?

For example, when will 308's/328's become vintage cars, when will 348's/355's become vintage?

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

    LOL

Looking at the cars in a concours I start to wonder whether there are any 348 left at all. It seems to go straight from 308/328 to 355. So a 348 wouldn't ever be vintage, but rather extinct.

Per the way this board is set up, I would say the last carbureted front-engine V12's were the last Vintage...but then that puts cars like the Dino and 512BB in a murky in between place...you'll have to ask the experts.

I thought it was strictly by years and hence the definitions will move eventually as time passes on.

Here in the MD MVA def. of "Historic"

    Historic:

    * The vehicle is 25 calendar years or older and has not been substantially altered, remodeled, or remanufactured from its original construction, or
    * The vehicle is between 20 and 24 model years old and is a model, of which the manufacturer produced 1,000 or fewer models for that year, as verified by the manufacturer (supporting documentation required). The vehicle has not been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from its original construction, or
    * The vehicle is between 20 and 24 model years old and is a make that the manufacturer no longer produces, as verified by the manufacturer (supporting documentation required). It is not substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from it original construction.

    I don't see "vintage" listed

Technically speaking, historic automobiles are categorized in this way:

Antique = Built prior to January 1905.

Veteran = Built between January 1905 and December 1918

Vintage = Built between January 1919 and December 1930

Post Vintage = Built between January 1931 and December 1939 or 1945, depending on whom you ask.

Classic = Built between January (1940 or 1946) and December 19XX

Clearly there are no Ferraris which would be considered "Vintage" using this criteria. Within our own little community here, however, we've decided to break Ferraris down into groups and have assigned the following names to these groups:

Vintage = All Ferraris up to and including the Dino 246 models and the 365 GTC/4.

Classic = All post-"Vintage" Ferraris up to and including the 348 and TR series cars.

    Modern = post-"Classic" Ferraris.

In Texas you can now get a Vintage tag for a 308.......it has an Antique car on it however, a Brass Era car.......pretty ugly tag IMO.

According to my car insurance agent, a vintage car is one that is 25 years old (or older). Using this logic, my '86 328 GTS will become a vintage car in 2011

Ironically, this makes me prehistoric I guess! LOL

I've got original 1964 Texas plates on my car--see profile pic, it's visible. They call it Classic plate registration--costs an extra $15.00/year. I think a car has to be 25 yrs. old to qualify, so you could have them on a 308.
