How about they publsh the CAUSE of fatal accidents - we know speed is less than 40%, alcohol drugs is a large percent; truck accidents are hugely influenced by fatigue (which can be addressed through legislation, but follow the money); most of the remainder can probably be put down largely to innattention / incompetent driving. Put the responsibility where it beleongs - the driver, stop relying on vehicle nanniez.

No. A friend of mine, a retired Army colonel, was commissioned by the Vic government to analyse road fatalities. He found the highest risk factors were age of the driver, and time of night. More than one male young adult in the car made it worse. Speed was about number eight. They simply ignored the report.

Not everyone ignored it. P-plate drivers in NSW are not allowed passengers after 10pm.

As for the low relevance of speed, many reports have found this. Speed enforcement outside of built up areas is about revenue.

Age is an issue if reflex times are retarded. My 90 year old dads reflexes are amazing as he recently demonstrated with me in the passenger seat in a 1942 Pontiac by avoiding a head on.

Lack of driver education - the only reason the road toll has reduced is due to improvements in vehicle safety. The standard of driving appears to be getting worse every year - defensive/advanced driving courses should be mandatory for every learner.

AAMI in Sydney offer a free day of driver training for all P plate drivers who have access to cars that are insured through AAMI
Then having completed the driver training day our insurance premiums were reduced on the car that we had my son nominated as a periodic driver
    Seems like a good scheme
    Cost me nothing = nice
    Educated my son = nice
Resulted in reduced insurance premium = nice

And now he has left to study in the UK for 6 months = fantastic

same in NSW, but I put both my sons through the free AAMI course that DMWC mentioned and it was a major benefit for both of them, particularly the emergency braking practice.

Both ride motorbikes too and feel it has made them better drivers - shall I buy Maddie a learn to ride course? What could possibly go wrong? :)

At this point in time only accessible Via OBD 2 ports, but I suppose satnav’s use GPS and thats tracable, phones talk to the network.
China just forced a people in a Provence to install GPS units at the owners expense so the CG can track them. Ours is just sneaky.

Note I was referring only to where direct access to the car is available - not the phone thing. There have already been a number of cases where police have accessed records from Ferrari in Qld. Fiat mate was head of accident investigation squad until about 18 months ago but IIRC this was also mentioned at a dealer workshop visit some years back.
