I had a conversation with a very interesting gentleman today and he informed me of something that could turn out to be very interesting. Do you guys remember the Norwood attempt at setting a class record at Bonneville in 2000? Car went 250 mph, set the record and held it for one week until someone else in the class went 250.5. Well, he received a phone call a few weeks back asking him if he would be interested in driving it again if they put the car back together for another attempt. Of course he said yes. He is going to let me know how things are progressing. If all goes as they are discussing, the attempt could be next fall during Speedweek. The goal is 300 mph. He told me of some of the interesting things that happen during a run at Bonneville and how much different it is than running on asphalt. I will keep you guys informed when I find out more.
Go to www.norwoodperformance.com/Bonneville%20GTO.htm to read the story of the first attempts at setting the record and then driver Tom Stephens setting it during his license qualification runs. Click on the "full details here" link in the body of the story. This could be fun.........................................Tom says that at 250 mph the rear wheels were turning at 55 mph faster than the rears and was losing a lot of traction. He said the rear was wanting to drive its way around the front of the car due to the aerodynamics and rolling resistance on the front tires..........He says that if he is allowed to use the whole length of the course that he can definitley break 300 mph in it. They only used 4 miles of the track on the 250 mph run..... Tom lives in Grand Prairie. I told him that you guys get together regularly for different things. He said that sounds cool and he might like to link up sometime......He asked me why I don't join in. Work,,,,,errrrrr!!!!!!!!!! Gotta make a living...
