Oh my god how stupid is the reporter, Mark Boyle of Channel 2, or how stupid is HPD? There was a armed robbery last night at a Denny's in NW Houston and cellphones were taken as well as other items, including cash, from the patrons. One of the gunshot victims has died but here is my issue. The last update I saw on Channel 2 the reporter totally screwed an ongoing investigation by mentioning that the police are hoping to track the cellphones stolen from the pinging off towers!!!

So basically he screwed the investigation by mentioning a 'key component' of the investigation. What an idiot!!!

Reporters are robots, they know only what they are told. If the HPD detective he interviewed didn't want that little tidbit out in the public domain, he should have kept his mouth shut. I wouldn't worry too much, though. How many armed robbers judiciously watch the evening news?? These idiots will probably butt-dial 911 in a couple of days from one of the stolen phones.

If it's been more than 12 hours, chances are that they already messed up enough to give a good lead. If the cell phones switch cell towers, they can ballpark the direction of travel and possibly end location of the stolen cell phones. Cross reference this to any people whose personal cell phones made the same direction of travel at roughly the same intervals, and you'll have a suspect list.

They might be reporting it to get someone to squeal, or turn themselves in. Besides, admitting to the crime saves quite a bit of time, and taxpayers dollars, and I'm fairly certain is the preferred method for most law enforcement agencies.

Being in law enforcement you should be aware of this tactic to put the heat on, kinda like when you were playing hide and seek as a kid and would say "I see you" when you had no idea where they were hiding and were just making them show themselves :)
If there is a murder and they say "no leads" or "no suspects" that just plays on the perps ego to brag. Any agency is'nt going to let out any info they don't want out, if they let it out to a reporter nonetheless there is a reason why.

Maybe the officer was under the impression that this information would not be made public by the reporter? Maybe the officer released information he should not have? Hard to say if it was ententional or not but I know I would not release this information so soon as the crime was a mere few hours old.
