If these could be delivered new to Switzerland in standard factory guise, then why did the cut down clam versions, and those with an additional fin that boxed in the gap needed to have existed to be registered in that country?

Delivery and road registration are two totally different things.
Simply because a car can be delivered to Switzerland does not mean that it can actually be insured and officially registered,
The first owner of this vehicle was Bruno Frey of Horw near Lucerne, who - at the time - happened to be the owner of an official Ferrari dealership and thus had access to a dealer plate (garage/trade plate) which allowed him to drive the car occasionally. But not register on official Swiss license plates.

Correct, and in my experience, many F40s (288 GTOs, F50s, Enzos and more besides) have been operated on dealer or trade plates for years, this is a fairly common practice worldwide as many dealer principals possess these cars.

By the simple expedient of increasing the image color saturation.
