Apparently the NFL will adopt the current playoff rules for overtime to apply to the regualr season as well. If the coin toss winner kicks a field goal then the other team gets a possession as well.

A step in the right direction, but why not just eliminate field goals in overtime entirely? A safety or touchdown to win.

But it's still BS - You score a TD and I don't even get a chance!? WTF?

One of the few nonsensical rules in the NFL IMO - I guess they just don't want to make it like college for some reason (?)

    Cheers,
    Ian

It's still ridiculous. It takes damn near a minute for the ref to explain how it works.

Why is it so hard to just have each team gets the ball once. Done.

Honestly, I think it should be like NBA overtime. You play OT and whoever is winning at the end of the period wins. If it is still tied, go into 2OT, and so on. Simple as that.

I agree, as long as both teams get an offensive possession.

You can't have a 5 min OT: kick off, have a team milk the ball for 4:57 and then score, and the other team never get a chance on offense.

I think they should just allow ties like stupid-ass hockey..... NOT

I think it makes at least better sense than one set of OT rules for the regular season and one set for the playoffs - I am not that bright and appreciate consistency :)

I agree, step in the right direction, but IMO they need to implement what the college level has - each team gets a possession regardless, whoevers on top after that wins, or it keeps going.

And the NHL hasn't had ties since the lockout ended, but I kinda miss the good old days when they did, :)

+1 It simply doesn't make sense any other way. Anyone know what their counter-argument is?

Yep. I don't understand the American "hatred" of ties. What gets me with hockey is it means some games are worth 2 and others 3 points - This could certainly lead to match fixing IMO - Take the Pacific division right now for example - The top 4 are all within a single point, and my Sharks play two of 'em twice more - *Many* scenarios in which it would be worth tying to allow each a point prior to getting the "bonus" point.....

Or, do what soccer does; 3 points for a win, 1 each for a tie - That encourages winning.

    Cheers,
    Ian

He never said he wanted it 5 minutes like the NBA. I think they should just add another period (15 minutes) and keep playing...so what if they get tired, someone will take advantage of it. I think the college OT is really stupid as it gives great field position to each team without having to earn it...teams should have to earn their field position and subsequently their points. FGs aren't earned in college OT...it's pretty much a given unless your kicker sucks and I hate games decided by kickers.

Hmmm - I obviously don't know as much about college football as I thought!..... I just learnt that I start on your 25 yard line - Wow!

I always believed (having not watched an OT game!) that you kick off in the regular fashion and away we go. Whatever happens, happens. Then I kick it to you after I score, unless I turn it over, which meets the "at least one possession each" requirement.

The NFL does start the possession with a kick off, right?

FWIW, I could go with 15 minutes too - Still tied? Do it again etc.

What I find abhorrent is if I score a TD on my first (or subsequent if you don't score) possession, it's all over - We should both get a chance.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I picked 5 min. as an example.
I have also seen teams drain 10 minutes off the clock on one possession - it can be done.

I'd just vote for a 15 min OT, and if they are still tied, then they tie.
Problem is, after 60 minutes, most of these guys are gassed, they are really conditioned to go about 60 minutes, you go much further than that - like 15 min more, you really do introduce more injuries into it.
Heat and humidity in the south will really drain these guys, compared to teams in the north or PNW.

They need to re-word the language of the rule...ie., what if the team that gets the ball first kicks a field goal, then does an onside kick and recovers it? Is it game over? The current wording would indicate that it is.

Not sure that counts as an 'offensive possession' if they never have the ball.
Now, if a team kicks a FG, then kicks off and the kick returner fumbles, I think that would be an 'offensive possession' since they touched the ball.
