The NHL did something pretty clever. They made the ice look more like an arena and blocked off the empty stands with banners. They also asked for audio clips from each city that was unique to their cities, such as the goal horn sounds.

    Doesn't look too bad.

I watched the exhibition Canes and Caps and they also seem to have some guy punching in appropriate fan sounds during play. The other thing...I couldn't belive this...that have advertising banners on the boards for all the local team sponsors. There were about 10 ads on the rink's boards for local NC companies / Canes sponsors.

The NHL network games have no crowd sounds. Seems a bit dull even if the fake ones sound fake.

Some of the preseason games shows the players a little rusty... But overall from what I've seen the play is pretty good.

The hunt for the cup starts this weekend!

NHL Betting Action Heats Up as Players Return to the Ice in Stanley Cup Qualifiers

After a nearly four-month absence, the National Hockey League resumed play this past weekend with games in Toronto and Edmonton with plenty of excitement.

Colorado’s Nazem Kadri barely beats the clock to give the Avalanche a 2-1 win Sunday over the St. Louis Blues. It was the first game for both teams since the coronavirus shut down the season in March. (Image: Altitude TV)

Five of the first 10 games were won by a goal. That included Sunday’s 2-1 win by the Colorado Avalanche over the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues, where Nazem Kadri netted the game-winner with just :00.1 left on the clock.

The NHL brought 24 teams of its 31 teams back to complete the season that shut down in mid-March due to the COVID-19 crisis. A dozen Eastern Conference teams have encamped in Toronto, while 12 Western Conference teams play in Edmonton.

This week, the bottom eight teams have been seeded in both conferences and will face each other in best-of-five series to determine the final four playoff teams from each conference. The top four teams in each conference will face each other in a round-robin format to determine their seeds.

The opening weekend did see some shocking results. The two 12 seeds, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks, posted wins in their series openers, and the two host teams, the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs, fell in their first games.

Much like the NBA, the NHL’s resumption format means there will be multiple games scheduled throughout the day. On Monday, six games will take place, all scheduled to start between Noon ET and 10:30 pm ET. With the games spread out, it may lead to more wagering on the game, including possibly more in-game betting as bettors will have a chance to watch more contests.

Bettors Like Avs, Flyers at BetMGM
The Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning were the favorites to win the Stanley Cup as play resumes. However, over at BetMGM, bettors like the Colorado Avalanche and the Philadelphia Flyers to lift up the cup.

The Avalanche are also drawing bettors on another future prop bet as well. BetMGM told Casino.org via email its seeing “a significant amount” of action on Colorado forward Nathan McKinnon to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, which goes to the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup playoffs. He’s also the oddsmakers’ top choice at +900.

Since there are no fans attending the games, MGM oddsmakers say there is no advantage given to the host teams, or for any games involving Canadian teams. And while the teams are coming off a significant stoppage, the oddsmakers say it hasn’t been that challenging to set odds.

With the neutral venue, it really comes down to matchups and who’s the better team statically,” BetMGM said in an email to Casino.org.

Through Friday, BetMGM is offering new customers who wager $1 on an NHL game $100 in free bets if a goal is scored in the game. The wager special is available in New Jersey, Colorado, West Virginia, and Indiana.

    Penguins, Blackhawks Popular at BetRivers
Over at BetRivers.com, the Rush Street Interactive sportsbook saw interest in several of Saturday’s games.

Saturday featured numerous betting opportunities in the lucrative Pennsylvania market, with the NHL going up against NBA and MLB games plus UFC and PGA golf. Despite the competition, nearly a quarter of the wagers made by BetRivers.com bettors in the Keystone State was on the Canadiens overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In Illinois, the second-most popular game betting-wise Saturday was the Blackhawks stunning 6-4 win over Edmonton.

So far some really interesting games. A couple of OT's and one that one literally at the buzzer. Some short handed goals, some pretty hard hits, and some stupid penalties taken.

Some teams seem like they haven't figured out they have started yet. Nashville played a terrible game against Arizona. And Chicago spanked Edmonton pretty good which was a shocker. Colorado did a good job coming back against St. Louis in the 3rd.

I would say so far the tournament has been a success. You don't miss the crowds too much because of the way they made the stadium decorations and have the fake crowd sounds , the players seem to be playing hard, the ref's seem to be on their game, and the goalies have made (overall) some very good plays.

But there's no real home field advantage anymore and that does mute the intensity.

Vegas falls behind Dallas 3-1 going into the 3rd. Almost had a fourth goal against them with a puck 3/4 over the line near the end of the period. In the last 10 minutes they score 4 goals (one an empty netter).

Uneven play for sure but the teams I think are trying to get their groove back. Vegas is missing Max Pacioretty.

Time to shake off those cobwebs!

CBJ Goalie is on FIRE. Leafs bounce back with a win after a should have won game 1. What a comeback by Vegas the other day. Edmonton giving a nice blow back to Chicago. WSH better shape up quick.

There's been a lot of injuries. Usually from collisions and a few pucks hitting people. One guy cut with a skate.

These guys are really playing hard but its taking a toll.

Chicago made one bad goal and it probably will cause them to lose the series with Edmonton

The Canes had 2 of their top 3 defencemen out in Rangers series. Hamilton will be back from next round. The way Brind'Amour has his team prepared, I don't think any of the top four want to face 'em.

Fleury had perhaps his worst game this season and still won because St. Louis played in their sleep. Allow a goal tender to stop only 15 shots on goal and you should win. Unfortunately 4 of those got through. The first goal and the 4th goal were just mistakes on Fleury's part. He knows it.

His game against Arizona was better but still too many mistakes. I think he can come back -- I hope he can come back -- but to be honest, the first two games raise questions.

Vegas is really missing Pacioretty. You put Stone with Pacioretty and they are simply awesome.

St Louis played so poorly they only got one shot on goal for most of the 3rd period, even when on the powerplay. That was not the same team that won the Stanley Cup last year.

Still a victory is a victory. Can they put it all together against Colorado? So far Colorado looks awesome. Vegas will start with back up goal tender Lehner.

The Jets are grounded... first to leave the bubble and play a little golf for a few months.
