My newly acquired 1983 Mondial QV Cabriolet runs great but after a long drive at high speeds, tends to sputter and pop at idle while in low gear waiting at traffic lights. The 30,000 mile servicing was performed before purchase and delivery. Any ideas on what could be the cause?
    Thanks

I had the exact same thing on my 80 GTBi. I replaced the plug wires, cleaned the plug extenders and dizzy contacts and the problem went away for about 2000 miles. I eventually eliminated the plug extenders and she runs very smooooooooooooth now.

Start your car in the dark and look at the plug extenders. If original, you may see some arching and they could easily need replacement.

I noticed better emission results without th extenders. Also, I've heard plenty of complaints about them.

How did you 'eliminate' the extenders? Do you just plug the wires directly down in to the spark plug? Doesn't this damage the wire at all? Forgive my ignorance...
