    Here's a little reminder that regardless of the service records, PPI or any sort of pedigree that a previous owner has tried to impart there is always hack workmanship found in these cars. I'm convinced that even in the finest shops they have the new kid work on the 400/412: note this sloppy wiring job complete with uncut zip tie to bundle things together.

    I would worry more about the cable (hand brake?) not pulling straight into that fitting!

    good catch Ken, but the brake is disconnected. I opened up my differential today and it was clean enough to eat out of. No chipped or unevenly worn gears, nothing scary. Needs only bearings and seals for another 70k miles!

    That's good to know, that your diff looks good. A 4,000 pound car with 300 lb-ft of torque and fat tires is not a good combination for differential longevity.

    What did the oil look like? What color and clarity? When I first bought my car the diff fluid was clear and French Racing Blue in color! I have never been able to figure what it was.

    I changed the oil to swepco 201 a few months ago just after I bought the car so it was essentially perfect.

    Any idea why the bearings were bad? Maybe it's just me but 70k miles is not very long for a set of bearings to wear out.

    The diff bearings are really not so bad but this is becoming a while you're in there situation. I have a great situation where I have access to a heated pro shop with a lift, tools and an experienced mechanic nearby to bail me out when I get in over my head. I agree that 70k is early but I don't want to open this thing up again for a long time!
