any of you folks watching this. i was just a tad too young to have seen PF back in the 70s - but i've been a huge fan of their music for a long time. it's really intriguing to see them playing together.

but since i've never seen nick mason play before, my brain is wired to think of him as "a car nut" or "ferrariy guy". so he looks WAY out of place behind a kit instead of standing next to or sitting in a cool car. my neurons are just broken in this regard. amsing.

    enjoy the show!

I was going to start a thread about just how STUPID MTV is....

Here is The Floyd, on stage with Roger Waters for the first time in years, and these two complete idiots can't STFU! Then they go to commercial during the end of Comfortably Numb...? Arguably one of the best 5 minutes in all of Rock and Roll???

I shut it off in disgust!

Of course they went to commercial. Pink Floyd isnt the coolest Rap artist or newest dumb blonde who cant sing out right now. I guess they just figured that the young people who watch dont know much about Pink Floyd or dont care. I just cant believe that they cut off Comfortably Numb. Thats just a song you dont cut off.
Just my rant. I cant stand 80% of the music coming out right now and I'm 19 nearly 20.

Right on! I am 45,and feel the same way. I was lucky enough to have grown up through some really great times in Music,(LOTS of Crap then,too....Bubble Gum,Pop,which JUST WON"T GO AWAY!,Disco,AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!)

I saw so many Bands Live during my Teens,to Now even..I still go to Concerts when I can...(Rock,Hard Rock,Metal) "Aerosmith" when they first came out. "RUSH",when they were just the "Warm Up Band" for "Canned Heat",and main attraction,"Steppenwolf". "AC/DC" when THEY first came out... Man,I could go on and on for Hours. I still have most of the Ticket stubs from around 1982 to now,(Metallica WITH Slayer, for instance....:) ) MANY "Superbowls of Rock" held in big outdoor Arena's. ( My Mom accidentally threw away all of my stubs, over 100,from 1974 to '81....:( )

My 20's,(Mostly Metal) 30's,( the '90's....Music starting to peter out...Grunge? My very first Band in the Early '70's,when I was in my early teens....now THAT was Grunge...:) ) But I do like some of them. ( Alice in Chains, for Ex.)

One good thing is that alot of the Old, Rock and Metal Bands are still out there Touring, but now, instead of a Huge Arena,it's now a small venue,Bar,Fest,Etc....We saw "Great White" at a Local Suburban "Taste Fest" last night.(Free!) "David Lee Roth" was at another. And "Ted Nugent" is at one Tomorrow Nite...:)

Fisrt time that I saw the Great "Alice Cooper" was at a Huge Arena. Now,I've seen him at the Chicago House of Blues. Close up and Personal.... He still kicks ass. He still tours. He still puts out Albums. They all do!

It's all a bunch of B.S. the way the Record Companies operate today. They have no Clue about real Music anymore! They promote the **** out of some talentless 16 year old bubble gum bleach blonde who freakin' LIPSYNC'S!!!! Or,some Inner City "Rapper". How many times can who use the SAME Lines....The same cRAP.....Nursery Rhymes "Rapped" to a heavy Bass and Drum Beat....Enough of that already!

MTV ....what the HELL is THAT!!!!!! Time for a New Rock Video venue. VH1 is better, but mostly replaying all of the Old stuff. They need to Start Playing and Promoting some New stuff....and NOT those New Bands that have that same Off Key,almost monotone Vocals...same exact crunchy Guitar. They all sound the SAME....:(

No talent. Can barely play. Can barely sing. But,they get PROMOTED to Death!!!!! ARRRGGGHHH!!!!

Today I was listening to some Old Black Sabbath. Some early Ozzy. Some UFO. Scorpions. George Lynch/Lynchmob. Now thats more like it! My 14 year old Daughter LOVES all of my old Classic Rock,Hard Rock and Metal stuff. And,some of the Tamer Stuff, too.

MTV sucks. Anyone even remotely involved in the music industry knows that. I grew up on Floyd, Zappa, Rush, Roxy Music, Gary Newman and I make my living from music. It really is a shame MTV has been allowed to remain unchecked for so long. I could go on and on about how screwed up the whole music industry is and why I support those who steal music but I'll leave that for some other time.

I had mtv on for a while yesterday as background "noise" while I was getting some work done. They kept playing the most awful crap (does that guy from Linkin Park know what "pitch" is??) and anytime something remotely decent came on, they would either cut to commercial or talk over it or go to an interview with who-gives-a-****. I had the impression that the whole day was a bust, that every performance pretty much sucked. Imagine my surprise when my sister called from the Philly Live 8 saying how good it was as she rattled off all the things and songs that MTV *wasn't* playing.

I wish I had seen earlier in the day that there was an unedited, live Live8 video feed online.

MTV is terrible and the industry is stupid. I say this from the perspective of dealing with music videos and licensing on a daily basis at my job. The crap that we're fed is unbelievable, and the kids eat it up.

I caught part of it on the tele. Really wish I had seen The Floyd - especially, since I was in London until last Friday. But, getting tickets would be really difficult. And the crowd would be more than I felt like dealing with.

Anyhow, watching it on TV, seemed bizarre that Trimspa was coming on telling me I could lose weight.

So there I was, having a great bonding moment with my 18 year old son, watching MTV of all things when, THEY WENT TO COMMERCIAL IN THE MIDDLE OF COMFORTABLY NUMB!!!

WTF!!! He and I were bothannoyed beyond belief.

    MTV sucks, VH1 sucks too.

PF on the other hand, was pretty amazing, at least what we saw.

Oh, on the Rolling Stones concert. I looked into tix for that. Here in Philly, any seat worth having was $400!!!! You know, I like the Stones, but $800 for two seats buys a lot of CD's.

I think the only time I saw them, about a hundred years ago, the tickets were $18 each, which was still more than I'd paid for a ticket to a concert to that point.

did u see me, i was right behind MTV's cameras earlier in the day before the concert. Ive heard mixed things from MTV. Either they did a good job getting the point across or they sucked on the coverage. Remember there were 9 different concerts going on AT ALMOST THE SAME TIME. Thats alot of performers.

if you tuned into the website, you would be able to hear the songs in their entirty. Otherwise, with MTV, they were not allowed to play songs in their entirety due to some rights they didn't have.

In other news... a friend of mine did get to go, said it was just wonderful!

Oh man, I would have looked out for you! No, I only had the TV on while I was working on my laptop, so I mainly listened to the coverage and looked up now and then.

My sister's apartment overlooked the whole thing; she watched it from the comfort of her living room!

FWIW, I got DVD quality copies of U2 and Pink Floyd's full performances today and they were both EXCELLENT.

I haven't been following this - they got Waters and Gilmour onto the same stage at the same time????? NEVER thought that would happen again!

I saw Floyd at the Paramont in Seattle in 1971, I think.

    As a musician, here's my semi-professional opinion:
[soap box]The crap that gets marketed these days is a result of the masses viewing music as a form of entertainment rather than a form of art. The majority has viewed music as entertainment for ages, but these days there is a lot more money backing the entertainment aspect of it.

Someone who wants to be entertained doesn't want music that will require an attention span. Who has the attention span for a song longer than 4 minutes these days? They also don't want songs that they can't sing along with and dance to. Since 99% of Americans wouldn't know how to dance to a song in an odd time-signature, all of the "marketable" songs are in 4/4, 6/8, or 3/4 time. And any vocalist with an exceptional range need not apply because people can't sing along with it in their cars. Truly thought provoking or creative lyrics don't make the cut either since the average American has a very average vocabulary, and doesn't want to have to think too hard to interpret what they're singing about.

[sarcasm]Instrumentals? What are those? Why would someone want to listen to a song with no words?[/sarcasm]

Guitar/drum/bass/keyboard solos of any respectable length fall into the same category as instrumentals because they lose the attention of the listener who was singing along.

Fear not. There ARE good, talented bands out there that actually make an effort to push the musical envelope. They just don't get marketed. It would be great if talent produced popularity, but instead the truly dedicated musicians who spend 6-10 hours a day developing their craft and becoming the best they can at it, get the shaft. As a result, I have no respect for anyone who makes money in the music industry based on how good they look rather than their musical ability.

I could go on and on, but I won't...[/soap box]

Hey- where can we get this Floyd DVD? I imagine there will be an official DVD released to raise more money for Bob Geldoff.

Seen Floyd three times but never with Waters on stage. Best show of any band. Stones are cool- seen them a few times. But the shows aren't getting better as the years pass by IMO.

I wonder what % of the money raised will go to fight poverty?

Off the actual concert? Nada! Unlike the original 1985 concert, this show is meant not to raise money, but to raise 'awareness.'

But as for proceeds from merchandise like upcoming DVDs, who knows...
