How did they find an available and type matched lung so quickly?

It may not have been that quick. This could have been in the works for months; they just kept it hush-hush. Considering the damage to his lungs in 1976, I'm amazed that it hadn't happened before now.

Wow, you are bored aren't you? Niki will only return at Monza if Ferrari agrees to ax Carlos Reutemann. Ironically one of Niki's rescuers was American driver Brett Lunger. Wonder if those guys keep in touch?

Lunger's mother was a DuPont, right? I also heard he was a jagoff . . . . which is OK with me, IMO.

    Doctor satisfied with Lauda condition

    AUGUST 6, 2018

Niki Lauda looks to be on the road to recovery.

The F1 world was in shock last week when it emerged that the Mercedes team chairman had a lung transplant and was in a coma.

But his doctor, Dr Walter Klepetko, told Bild newspaper that the 69-year-old F1 legend is now awake, in a stable condition, and with his respirator switched off.

He said the new lung is working well.

"We are very, very satisfied with this development," Klepetko said.

"It's hard to imagine a stronger fighter than Niki," he added.

The road to recovery is long and hard. 50% of all lung transplantation recipients are dead within 5 years. :(

I think that Niki is held together with scar tissue at this point. He has incredible drive, I hope that he has a speedy and complete recovery.

I'm sure that's true, but to be looking at those odds when you "should" have died in 1976... I guess Niki is man enough to know every day is bonus time.

Lauda should return to normal says doctors

    AUGUST 9, 2018

Niki Lauda should be able to return to his "normal life".

That is the view of the doctors who are treating him in intensive care at a Vienna hospital.

The F1 legend and Mercedes team chairman recently had a lung transplant, and the doctors told Osterreich newspaper that Lauda, 69, was close to death.

But now they are "very, very" happy with his progress in hospital.

Doctor Rainer Oberbauer told Bild newspaper that the transplanted kidney donated by Lauda's wife Birgid ten years ago had also failed.

"Fortunately we were able to restore function," he said.

As for the new lung, surgeon Walter Klepetko commented: "If the course continues to be positive, the patient can return to his normal life."

Another doctor, Christian Hengstenberg, said: "The patient will certainly need intensive care for some time, but after that it can be less intensive."

No air travel for Niki Lauda

    AUGUST 14, 2018

Niki Lauda may not be able to return to the F1 circuits any time soon.

Recently, as he recovers in intensive care from a lung transplant, the F1 legend's surgeon said Lauda should be able to return to "normal life" eventually.

But Osterreich newspaper claims the Mercedes team chairman had a setback over the weekend, when he had to be connected to a dialysis machine.

Lauda, 69, has since improved, but Osterreich says he will not be able to travel by plane for six months.

And he has been told to holiday only in "neighbouring countries" so that he can return quickly to the hospital in Vienna if need be.
