Yeah, just looked at it is morning and was wondering the difference between it and the D3 but haven't really looked at the difference between the two yet.

There are a lot of cool things about the camera. I will be waiting a little bit to buy one but I think sometime in March/April for the season change I will be getting one. I am very happy with my D70 so I can't wait for the D300/D3.

Snice the D3 is $5K, I didn't spend much time looking into the specifics :) I think the full-frame sensor is the biggest difference. I'm not a professional photographer, so I'll probably opt for the D300.

As a D200 owner, I'm a bit sad. Now I have to lust over the D300 and D3 until I can get one. It won't be any time soon, though.

When I get a new camera, it'll probably be the D3, D3X, or whatever the latest model the D3 is then.

Full Frame with 9 FPS and 13MP is just too good to pass up. The new Nikon lenses don't look to shabby either. If I had $10,000 to spend on a nice piece of glass, that 600mm f/4 VR would be on my doorstep come November.

*Fades into drooling over a new D3...*

You don't need one, you take great pictures with what you have :)

I was going to say I will upgrade my D40 but after seeing the Price I think I'll have to stick with my D40 for a while. The Nikon D80 looks good, is it any good?

Unless you pass it up for Full Frame 22MP with a slightly slower speed (ie the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III).

My next buy will be the Canon EOS 40D. I have finally given up the 5D dream.

I really like the new Nikons, but have invested too much in Canon glass to make the switch.

Any electrical/optical engineers here want to invent a good kit that will allow one to use Nikkor lenses on Canon bodies and vice versa with little quality loss?

I own both the Nikon D200 and Canon 5D. Each has it's advantages, but overall I prefer the 5D--warmer pictures, better color rendition, full frame and intuitive use. The D200 is very nice, and ever so edged out. It's for sale too.

Have the D80 and love it, but need to sharpen up my skills on playing with shutter speeds to blur the back-ground and focus on single frame items.

    *aperture

Yes, you need to adjust your shutter speed for exposure accordingly, but aperture is what determines depth of focus.

edit: Erm, unless you mean panning, in which case blur is the right term and yes, shutter speed is the determining factor.

Is there any official release date for the D300 yet? I was hoping to buy myself a birthday present, but it's not looking too promising...

I'm sure it will blow out just like the D200 did. Ken Rockwell has a great site discussing the camera--he's just brilliant.

By the end of next year I want to upgrade from my D40, should I go with whatever replaces the D80 or save a lot and go for a D300?

Your D40 does everything the D300 will, but the D300 will give you more control over more aspects of the camera in different modes. Don't fall into the chasing Mega-pixel trap because that is not what it's about. Only consider that big move if you are looking for more control over your shots. Also, the D300 has an absolutely revolutionary 3 inch almost HD screen on the back, and you can shoot from it unlike other (SLR's) cameras. Also, you can make adjustments to the camera and see them on the screen rather than looking at the dinky lcd.

I have one on order and should get mine next week. The wife's going to kill me. I'll ebay the D200, and I can't bear to relinguish my 5D so it'll have to stay with me.

I strongly suggest looking at Ken Rockwell's sight before pulling the trigger on such a monster camera. Ken puts it pretty well in saying: if you have the money to blow, go get it.

    Cheers~
