I am looking to upgrade into the DSLR class, and was pretty sure about the Canon. Recently, the price differential for the Nikon has really been looking pretty appealing. Anyone have any first hand experience in the comparison? Is the Canon worth it, or should I save the money?

Have a few photographer friends and they say go with the Nikon in this lower end segment of the DSLR market. Said the extra MP in the Canon really doesn't mean too much.

I bought the D50 a few months ago and it's been great. I haven't used it that much, but my girlfriend is taking up a hobby of photographing weddings now and has used it a bunch. She loves it.

I think you'll be happy with either of them. They are both very good entry level cameras. But your choice may depend on what you are planning to photograph and how large you want to print the images. I believe 350D's AF (used with USM lenses) is slightly faster than Nikon's so it may help when shooting sports, and larger sensor may help when making larger prints. But D50 has a bigger buffer (images are written to the memory card faster) and Nikon seems to have better grip. (350D is very small) I always recommend going to a camera shop and handle the cameras. How it feels in your hand is extremely important.

Having said that, I'm a Canon user and I think they are the best! :D

Yeah, I've been kicking this around for over a year now. My neighbor has the Canon and I know it takes terrific shots. I really like the Nikon D50 and D70s and their lens packages. I've always been a Canon guy, but am leaning towards Nikon for my next one. I think it's win-win.

I was deciding between the two cameras about two weeks back and bought the D50.

I felt that the Rebel XT was too small in my hand and would be uncomfortable to hold for any length of time. The D50 felt just the right size.

Additionally, the D50 is cheaper by about $200 ... useful money to put into a good lens.

But both cameras are more than adequate for an amateur/semi-pro. You can't go wrong with either. Buy some good lenses too.

I used this site to read about the cameras: www.dpreview.com and these sites for lens info: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/ and http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm#cameras

You can't lose with either of those choices!

But if you're into the nitty-gritty, www.digitalcamerainfo.com does testing like color accuracy and more than you'll need to know.

IMO, there is no comparison between my D50 and any Rebel XT. My Dad has a rebel xt and (to me) it feels so cheap compared to be D50. It is an amazing camera and not too expensive. Just be sure to get a good lens!

Pic that I took right after I got my 70-300mm ED lens(GREAT lens)...

    I love my D50.
I don't have any experience with the Canon, so I can't comment on it.

Another very happy D50 owner here. Pictures are amazing and it feels good. I had a Nikon N70 and I can use its lenses.

Both are good, if you already own a Canon SLR get the Canon, if you own a Nikon go with the D50.

My sales guy steered me toward the D50 by asking me a slew of questions....and he was right.

So wow...seems like everyone likes their cameras, whether it be the Canon or Nikon...

I am just entering the market so I have no previous Nikon or Canon lenses, so that doesn't make it any easier. Any drawbacks on either camera?

I think at this point you should probably spend time checking them out in depth at a store. Get a real feel for handling them. Change the lenses. Fiddle with the settings and see if there are differences in ergonomics you prefer. Seriously, you're looking at two excellent cameras, so maybe there will be a preference that emerges with some hands-on time.

I totally agree. Play with both well and learn about their features. They are both good cameras whichever you choose. :)

make sure you handle both cameras at the same store, feature wise they are close enough to be considered the same. I was in the same boat, trying to decide and it was a coin toss for me, they both had features I liked, so find the one that fits your hands the best.

Then the salesman working another client put down a Canon 20D on the counter that the guy next to me was looking at. I accidentally picked it up and one feel of that camera was all it took, more money but I walked out with the 20D.

I really do believe these in each price category the competing camera are similar enough to not look at features, look how they feel, remember you will be shooting with it for a long time.

I'm also ready to upgrade to a digital SLR. Is it true that my old AF lenses from my Nikon 2020 will work on a D-50? I understand that the focal point if different, but will they mate?

I'm not a Nikon expert but I believe old lenses do work on new digital bodies. (there may be some restriction though....) Aperture will have to be set on the body, not on the lens.
