Any pro or high level guys out there who have been waiting for a long time? The D800 should be available this month w/ 36 MP FX-format for about 3k. How sweet is that? The flooding in Thailand had the Nikon plant under water & delayed production but now it is here. Not sure I need 36MP but welcome quality promised by this fine instrument. Will you bite? Any concerns?

I have the new Canon 5DmkIII on order, but I'm mulling canceling it and jumping ship to Nikon (probably keep my 40D and 50mm lens, sell the rest).

There were three things I wanted from the new 5D:

    Better AF.
    Better low speed DR.
    Better low light.

Canon certainly delivered on AF, though screwed over people who shoot extended telephoto lenses (no AF when minimum aperture is f/8 or smaller, e.g. a 100-400 + 1.4x extender).
They certainly delivered on low light.
They don't appear to have delivered on DR (preliminary reports are that it's no better than the 5D2 around ISO100).

Nikon is using Sony Exmor sensors, which have some heavily patented tech that increases dynamic range dramatically. The D7000 is good for close to 14 stops, and the D800 will probably be close to that (versus maybe 12 for the 5D). As a landscape guy, DR is huge.

I'm not thrilled at the idea of handling 36MP files, but when shooting family photos and whatnot I could use DX mode (and essentially have a newer D7000), and save the full frame for more spectacular photo ops.

I would, however, have to re-invest in glass.

    Sigh.

The samples on imaging resource are simply astounding at low iso. Crazy detail. Almost MF-like.

    Damn.

I'd jump on it right away if I had the $$$. I've been looking at upgrading and this would be a great camera to have. Maybe in a year or two when prices come down a little...

I've taken 13,000 since last July (when my son was born), so that will amortize much quicker.

Thinking of sticking with the 5D3. Still have it pre ordered, and then I have 30 days to return it if I don't like it, eating only return shipping costs.

Haha, kinda I guess. I'm more concerned with my perception about Canon's direction than a paper comparison between image quality from competing bodies.

I can't believe be they couldn't get f/8 to work acceptably well for the new AF unit (they have in the past; D4/D800 does it now).

    Just doesn't make sense.

Only conclusion I've been able to come to is that they want to drive sales of faster more expensive glass.

I don't want to pour more money into a company that operates like that.

Maybe there's truly a technical reason they could not add f/8 autofocus sensors, but they've not convinced me.

I have so much good glass that I want to try at 36 mp..
I know mp are not everything...but f1.4 and 36mp sounds so Wicked together..
imagine shooting at shutter 800 and iso 50 and aperture 1.4..in daylight at a moving target.
    Ayyyyyyyyyy! Caramba!
I will have one when the dust settles..by the summer no doubt.

Does anyone have f.98 lenses......would love to see the quality there..

Zeiss built NASA some f/0.7 lenses for the Apollo missions. They were later used to film Eyes Wide Shut by candle light!

They removed the low pass (anti aliasing) filter for the E. In theory, images should be sharper (the samples they chose make me skeptical), at the risk of for moire.

I find it unlikely that it will make much of a difference in the world, particularly given the lack of Nikon glass is capable of enough edge-to-edge sharpness on a 36MP FX frame.

Nope, I use my phone for family video.

The D800 allows you access to uncompressed video which is nice. 5D3 doesn't. But the canon will shoot video at higher sensitivities which could be useful.

The 800E will be great for landscapes - or so I've read.

Currently there seems to be a huge bottleneck somewhere and A LOT of misinformation about the ship dates of both the D4 and 800/800E. I had great luck getting cameras from amazon.com and placed my D4 order with them. I should have gone to B&H or Adorama and used my NPS number. O'well.

Currently everyone is in a holding pattern waiting for information - let alone cameras. Go look at peoples rants at dpreview.com.

    d800e

the AA filter is swapped for a different filter that doesn't act as an AA filter as opposed to removing anything altogether.

"For Nikon, removing the anti-aliasing filter in the D800 to create the D800e wasn’t quite as simple as it sounds. The filter in the D800 is actually two layers, surrounding the infrared filter. The first layer blurs the image horizontally, and the second one blurs it vertically. To create the D800e Nikon has apparently swapped out the second filter with one which re-converges the image that the first layer blurs. This seems a little overly complex compared to just junking the filters all together, the way Maxmax does, but may have been a smaller manufacturing change or been needed to keep the IR filter functioning properly.'

and they charge an extra $300 to do it. Still cheaper than a mkIII though.

Lenses are fast going to become the problem as this moves forward...

I does seem that they need to refresh their line with lenses capable of more edge-to-edge sharpness.

I just fear the price tags. Canon's new 24-70 2.8 is way more expensive than the previous edition (1400 to 2300).

In starting to look at third party glass. Sigma is making really good stuff. Their 70-200 scored higher than the canon model in DXO's tests, and is substantially cheaper. They're also making some interesting unique lenses. The 120-300 2.8 OS intrigues me. Add a 2x tele converter and you're at 600 f5.6 for under 4k, and you have the ability to zoom out.
    Impressive.

I am sure some other photographers will chime in here, but not many people will ever need a 30+ megapixel camera. I sure do not. In fact I don't need anything past the 12 I use now.

As cameras (and lenses) move forward, ISO and dynamic range are far more important to me. There are other considerations such as FPS (shooting motor sports) and write speed to cards. The D4 has a lot more for me than the 800/800e..and having looked at the specs of the 800/800e, I can't see why really anyone needs that many MPs - except that photographer that wants to create wall size pictures of landscapes/cars/etc.

Studio photogs who want the flexibility of a DSLR (as opposed to medium format) will likely flock to the d800. D4 is more of a sports/action camera.

D800 likely has better low ISO DR than the D4.

I've been considering the D800. The HUGE files scare me, but it has the option to shoot in APS-C mode (22MP), and a few other larger sizes (including 4x5 aspect ratio).

My other concern is the ability of (affordable) lenses to resolve that pixel density at the perimeter of a full frame sensor.

I had a 5D3 pre ordered. Canceled it a few days before it would have been shipped. I shoot MAINLY 100-200 ISO, and the Sony sensor tech used by the d800 gives it a good two extra (shadow) stops over the canon at that sensitivity. Now I'm tending back towards canon due to glass concerns.

I should just give up and save my money. I'm happy with the majority of my shots as is.
