It is a nice price point. Rumors for Canon's 5D refresh put it in the 2700 dollar range, and this may help solidify that.

I'm looking forward to full IQ tests. In particular, dynamic range (hopefully at least as good as D7000) and sensitivity (hopefully close to D3s, but I doubt it).

    I don't think it's bizarre.

Nikon too recognizes the downside to high pixel density, hence the low(er) resolution of the D3 and D4. I do imagine Nikon will eventually push out a D4x studio version, and that Canon too will release a refresh to their studio line (1ds4?).

But the average user doesn't work in a controlled environment equipped with adjustable lighting. For most of us, a lower resolution, higher sensitivity camera is far more flexible.

I think that's what canon is chasing with the 1dx: the "available light" user. I hope the rumors tying a consumer camera to that philosophy are sound. If they announce a 40MP 35mm sensor for a 5D refresh, I'd be disappointed (unless they introduce an entirely new offering, eg 4D, which follows the 1dx model).

    New Benchmark for sure...
Now if only the dry weight would drop...they could own the industry.

I believe it's lighter and smaller than the D700, but not significantly.

It's always going to be a trade off between rigidity, weight and cost. They could easily house it in a cheap, light plastic chassis with sufficient strength for the mirror mechanism, but most people would balk. On the flip side they could use state of the art materials (say: machined beryllium body with GFRP panels), but that would push the cost beyond the point of reason.

I think the magnesium body is a reasonable engineering/business compromise.

I really, really, really wanted Nikon to put this camera in a position so that I'd sell my D7000 and buy it and go back to FF, but for $2k more, other than FF I just don't see the advantage. If they'd have priced it at $1999 I think they'd be better off, though I'm sure they'll sell a million of them anyway.

That will create some heavy files to throw around.

I think press phorographers and the likes will not be too pleased.

At only 4FPS, I don't know if press folks are their target buyers. I'm convinced it's a studio cam.

they traded ISO for resolution... less MP = better ISO which is why all the top tier cameras are going to compromise MP sizes.

36mp = 78mb files from what I read... so there's the camera and the computer upgrade to go with it.

Then there's the glass. How many of the lenses that are solid performers now are going to show chinks in the armor when backed by 36mp?

MF MP numbers on a 35mm sensor is not just a body upgrade and all will be nirvana it seems.

Yeah I agree. Definitely a studio camera, or a camera for someone who is really taking their time to set up a pic.

good point. Over at canon rumors they're saying that canon is offering up new glass in record numbers this year, and speculating that it's to support a new high MP cam.

95% of owners will opt for Battery pack /portrait handle, that with a 70-200 lens will bring it into muscle man territory..

    This.

My dad is going to be pissed when he sees the press release, he got his D300 stolen about a year ago and has been waiting for the D800 to be released. He shoots football games for USC and will not be pleased with 4fps.

this isn't a "pro" camera, this is a consumer model... even at $3k

You want "pro" fps, they make you pay for it or drop down to an asp-c which a lot of pro sports shooters already use.

78mb a file makes up a bit part of that fps limit I suspect and marketing.

I know that he's been wanting a D4 or D3 for that exact reason, he just can't justify the price for the actual amount of time he shoots.

He's been using an APS-C for a while now, I think that he was just hoping to have something with a bit more "oomph" FPS wise. I bet he'll be purchasing one anyways, he's been borrowing equipment from me for a while now and is dying to get a new camera.

Nice - I am hoping that it will drive the D700 price down to 1500 or so. I would like to get an FX someday.

    Standard or "e"?

D4 delivery is getting delayed. Hope the same doesn't happen for 800 buyers.

Rumors abound, but please Canon, don't let me down. I'd be on that mk3 like white on rice.
