Before I sent the TR to PA for it's major I made sure the registration was up to date including the bi-yearly collectors status...well this year I was told that since the car is now over 25 years old, I would have to register it as a historic vehicle, put QQ plates on and have all of the restrictions that goes along with that..or put the car through inspection...

The car just came back and is running really well, however I am not so sure I want to bring an 88 TR to my local NJ DMV to have one of the guy's slip the clutch and FU the car and possibly fail emissions...

Anyone have a good suggestion of either a local facility or a more friendly DMV?

I don't know how far are you from the Flemington DMV, this year I was allowed to stay inside of my F360 and almost do my own inspection, they just hooked it to the scanner...they were quite friendly...I brought the entire facility to a stand still...all the lines stopped to come and see my car and it was so funny to see some jealous faces on a couple of owners of a Porsche and a Corvette, when the technicians told me to stay on the car, because they were afraid to damage it.

I have my '83 308 & '95 355 registered as normal cars. no special plates, no special treatment. As such, the cars need to pass emissions inspection every two years.

I've always taken my cars to McPeeks in Ramsey NJ. He has worked on a number of Ferrari and has taken care of my 308 before. This way, if the car doesn't pass the 1st time, he can fix what's wrong.

Both my cars went this year to him and both passed just fine.
$75 inspection fee. Extra tuning is on an hourly basis. He's reasonable & fair.

Last time I had a 25+ year-old car (around 2008), I recall that I was exempted from NJ inspections. Is my memory faulty in this regard?

Up until a few years ago they did not force you from collectors to historic once you were over 25 years...and both are emission exempt...but historic is highly restricted and you must have special plates...

    Thanks Clyde...

I still have regular (non QQ) plates on our '78 VW beetle...I only drive it 4-500 miles a year, but like having the option of driving it anytime (not that I would commute in it- that would be torture). I just go to the local garage every 2 years for the inspection sticker. I'm not sure if they check the emissions on it, but I do know they check the gas cap of all things...

I took my '95 355 to the state inspection station 2 years ago. No gas cap check, no other special checks. Just stuck the probe up the tailpipe & checked emissions low rpm & hi rpm. She failed, so off to McPeeks she went for twiddling & then she passed.

I understand that there are still two categories: collectors where no special plates are needed and no mileage check at the state level (insurance may vary). It does require special registration.
Then antique which requires special registration and plates.

I'll see if I can find the law & post it

True. But they force you now to choose regular registration or historic.

Is that Cristie getting more state income? Gas prices in NJ seem to be higher - closer to NY that I ever remember in the past.

In NY cars are exempt after 25years. No more sniffing and only $10.00.

Can't do that anymore if you don't have a PA drivers license.
