PARIS — Formula One’s inaugural Grand Prix of America slated to be run in New Jersey has been postponed until 2014.

“The event is not going to happen” next year as planned, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said Friday.

“Everything is set up, but it’s now too late to finish on time,” Ecclestone said.

The race is planned for a spectacular course along the Hudson River across from Manhattan through the towns of Weehawken and West New York, N.J.

Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner earlier told The Jersey Journal that the race was not going ahead next year. The newspaper said Turner and another unnamed mayor claim organizers were behind on road repairs and permits.

“The reason is because they didn’t quite know what they were doing,” Ecclestone told the Press Association. “They got all the permissions together. Everything was done, that was all fine, but then they missed the boat a little on some financing that was coming in.”

A spokesman for New Jersey race promoter Leo Hindery Jr. declined to comment on the report.

Ecclestone ruled out the Turkish Grand Prix returning as a temporary replacement.

“No, no, no. It will be 19 races,” he said.

No surprise. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime.

I'm more surprised it took this long to announce the cancellation. Ugh. I'm still optimistic that it'll happen. Someday. Maybe...

Here's what's emblematic of that area. I commute every day on a portion of that proposed race route. Most of the road is just fine but there have been two potholes on the long river level straight stretch that had gone unrepaired, not even a crappy repair, for over two years!

One is a more typical bad surface issue but the the other one is a snap your front wheel off monster that causes all of the traffic to swerve towards the other lane. It's dangerous.

All that traffic every morning for over two years.

Last week they just dumped some blacktop into the hole so it's better but everyone still swerves.

Yeah, these guys are right on top of nothing.

It does look like the new parking facility build will be done and that was supposed to serve as the pits somehow? Also, one of the new access roads for that waterfront area on the sound end has finally been completed after 13 years of miserable road conditions so progress happens. Just not fast.
