    Hi all --

Anyone know of a reputable, preferably independent, M-B mechanic in north or central NJ? I just picked up a '76 450SL to satisfy my wife's desire for a convertible. The car seems fine mechanically and the cosmetics are acceptible. Most importantly, I know the PO and the car was well cared for from new.

I know that the timing chains need to be replaced at 100k miles. Since I'm just over that line I'd like to get it taken care of ASAP. I'm fairly certain that deferred maintenance isn't an issue on this car but it is 30 years old so I'd like someone I can rely on to look at the shocks, brakes, etc. and tell me what I'm in for.

Any suggestions, rumors or gossip greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ron

    Ron,

Wolfgang in Tenafly NJ is one of the best MB mechanics in this area and will know your car inside and out. There's also another specialized MB mechanic in Paramus, but I would try Wolfgang first.

Give him a shout...and you can let him know that Eric Danetz sent ya. :)

As I remember one of the weaknesses of the 450SL was the timing chains. The 380SL which came next made some changes. Most 450SL problems occured well before 100,000 miles.
