The Assembly Number is something Ferrari started putting on cars somewhere around serial number 83000; the Assembly Number is something of which my knowledge is very vague and minimal... Maybe someone else here can explain their purpose to us...

In any case, each car - not just NNOs, but every road-going Ferrari - has its own Assembly Number... Unlike serial numbers, Assembly Numbers are in the same on all NNOs... And unlike Euro model serial numbers, Assembly Numbers can be seen on any car, Euro, US or otherwise...

Assembly Numbers aren't as good or better than serial numbers, but they definitely hold significance; for example, when you're trying to identify a car and can't get to the serial number, just get the Assembly Number and hope that, at a later date, you or someone else can get both the serial & Assembly Numbers and then you'll have record of the car from the first time you saw it...

Assembly Numbers on NNOs are easy to spot when the rear deck lid is open... Standing at the back of the NNO, look for a carbon fiber panel on the left side, next to the wheel well... about half way up that carbon fiber panel, right past the wheel well, you'll see a metal plate with an Assembly Number... Now when the deck lid is down, if you stand right in the middle of the back of the NNO, your left leg right behind the rear diffuser and you lean over towards the glass and look left, you can see the Assembly Number... Spotted...! & viola, there you go...

Below, some pictures of an Assembly Number, so that you have a visual of where to search next time you see an NNO...

    Happy hunting... :)

    FYI:

The assembly number is easily visible on Enzos EVEN IF the rear deck lid is closed, you just need to peek over the left vent louvre. Don't hesitate to practice this :D

i didn't forget, just got behind this morning.
The first pic is from a F355 parts book.
Second from an Enzo, as is the third. As you can see, sometime its is the difference of 2mm on a washer that makes a difference. The Assy. number is the way to tell what car has what. Not sure why they use it and not the VIN, but it makes my life eaiser.....

and yes, it is true that Ferrari calls them Ass. numbers. :)

So different parts are valid from different Ass. Nos....? How do you know what the parts are good up to...? i think i'm still a little confused...

hey, another great reason to leave the parts to us!!! :)

    jk

ok, look at the second picture. see how it is listing a spacer?, part #24 well, cars up to assy # 45997 need the 10.5mm spacer. cars after that, from 45998 on need the 12.5 mm spacer.
they changed the design of a part that affected others and use the assy # to let you know when the split is.

i still have no answer on why they use assy #'s over vins, since vins are stamped into the chassis as they are being built, but maybe its due to the production proccess, like the assy is a "build #"

btw, my shift key aint working, so sorry for the non-caps.
    :D

Dude, that's a piss poor excuse - you should have two shift keys... :)

Thanks for the explanation... i'm gonna have to read it a few more times and probably call you sometime this week before i get a FULL understanding of it (which STILL might not happen)... This could prove to be very interesting... :)

It seems as though since the federal chassis numbers took over that Ferrari decided to create a shorter numbering system for internal uses. As Rich pointed out parts books use them, often to the exclusion of VIN's. Internal documents such as service bulletins always have assy # but not always a vin. Recalls always have vins and assy # but that is I'm sure to comply with Federal law. I really think just from experience that the system was created for ease of use. IIRC it came about during the 348/TR period, not too many years after Ferrari was required to adopt the Federal vin system. I do know however from eyes on experience that the cars are assigned a vin first. Bare 360 bodies rolling out of Scaglietti already have a vin stamped in the body under the Rt seat but no assy # plate.

Mike 360 I could swear I saw an assy # plate on an F1 car, can't remember which one but as I recall it was an early to mid 90's vintage.

NNO, I have a friend who was with Ferrari factory when those went into use, I will email him and see if he can tell us any more about them.

As far as I know, the VIN is stamped at the begin of the production process, while the Ass# is stamped on the assembly line. So, it's purely related to the order on the assembly line. But that's just my thought ...
