Just replaced the alternator in my Dino with a buddy PITA but she's done and rolling again... Had it rebuilt 2 day service for $350
Such a difficult job, that one. I did that some two decades ago, and don't think I am limber enough to do out again. Ye, what a pain.
It took me a genuine 12 hours to remove and replace the alternator and that was with the benefit of a hoist and plenty of tools. It is a terrible job.
Apparently you can access the alternator to take it out if you cut a hole through the firewall in the trunk. I know its not original - but 12 hours to change an alternator! I would rather have the hole and do a very good job on it, making it look it was meant to be.
Later cars had a section cut out on the fuel tank to give some clearance for removing the alternator making the job easier but on the early cars it is a very big job and it is probably fastest to remove the fuel tank on the right side.
With the car on a hoist I can do the job in well under 5 minutes reaching from the underside and feeling around. I thought 20 minutes was generous
This would be fun to watch, not in any way doubting this is untrue, but more about the positioning of the hoist and the car. Like watching OMGJON work his magic. You guys do some of the same magic. Shawn
"My" car doesn´t charge either. Nuvolari can you give me any recommendations on how to do it in 5 or maybe 20 minutes ??? the car is well up, so I can come from all sites but everything is soooooo small, it seems for me know that only a smurf can do it!
Perhaps we have a misunderstanding here. The 5 minutes is for the installation of the D3S Drip Saver I designed. It is NOT for the removal/re-installation of any part of the charging system. As previously mentioned it took me an honest 12 hours to remove and replace my alternator on a 246. Later cars are a little easier because the fuel tank has a relief cut in it to give more clearance but on the early cars it is a bear of a job requiring the removal of a LOT of parts including the oil cooler
Yes it is not the most pleasant or easiest job on a Dino but on the last occasion I replaced the Alternator it took me 4hrs with 1 hr swearing time allowance. I never had to remove the oil cooler or manifold, it does pop out eventually. Tony
