Just bought a barn find 1993 348ts. Engine hasn't been run for two years but was apparently ok when it went into the 'barn'. Had a clutch problem when laid up. Tried to do a compression and leak down yesterday, but couldn't turn the engine for the leak down as despite having the car in gear and turning the back wheels with the car jacked up the engine is not turning at all. Turning the engine on the starter is fine and the pistons are going up and down. Seems there is no connection between the engine and gearbox. Pedal is hard and feels correct. Surely, even if the clutch is toast it would still turn the engine, or am I wrong? Any ideas would be a big help. Engine has to come out anyway to do the belts and see what's what, but it would be nice to find any clutch problems now, rather than later.

    Cheers.

Welcome to Ferrari Chat, "Foxy"! Congratulations on your 348.

From your description, it sounds like the clutch itself is the problem. If the engine does turn over on the starter, then you know that the shaft that runs from the crankshaft to the flywheel is intact. That doesn't involve the clutch. It's possible that the clutch lining has worn to the point that it has completely separated from the disc. Or it's remotely possible that the hub on the disc has sheared off.

In any event, it's very easy to remove the clutch housing (less than an hour) to diagnose the problem. If your 348 is a 1993, it should have a single disc clutch. There are "how-to" threads in the archives to help you along.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but not being much of a mechanic, thought it best to seek advice. I just wasn't sure if it could stop working completely.

Engine has to come out so I will investigate further, but thanks for the info. Will post what I find and will probably be a regular on here asking odd questions!

I just bought a 1993 348ts from a guy who took it into a local garage for some clutch and brake work. That was two years ago and he never came back! Garage tried to get hold of him but he ignored their calls. Eventually they pushed it outside and dumped it down the side of the building with a ratty old cover over it.

I'm a motoring Journalist and was doing an article on abandoned exotics and found out about it (happens a lot in the Middle East). Nearly made me cry when I saw it! Set me off on a mission to buy it, as I have always wanted a Ferrari. Finally got hold of the owner and managed to get him to sell it to me for a few thousand dollars. Then he had lost the papers for it (big problem here). Luckily he found them and we did the changeover last week! On another note, I also found an original Lotus Esprit abandoned down a side street, with the turbo in a box on the passenger seat! After some checking it turned out to be linked to the Russian mob or something, so we left that one well alone!

Car is Chiaro Blue with only one parking ding in the rear quarter (easy fix) and loads of scratches. Checked it with Ferrari and its not stolen or anything nasty. Trying to get hold of any service history at the mo. Car came from Saudi originally. I plan to respray it red, as it will not lower the price out here too much as everyone wants red cars! Wheels are all scuffed and it has dodgy Chinese tyres on the front!!! Interior is worn but in fairly good condition. Rear headlining is hanging down in the tunnel behind the passenger's head. Not sure how to fix that one!

Engine hasn't been run in two years but was allegedly running ok (albeit with an 02 problem I think) when it went into the garage. Need to get it running, then registered and then I can pull it apart for a spray and a bit of TLC. Will post some pics once I resize them.

Will keep you all in the loop!

Thanks PAP 348. I think I will after loads of advice for the 'project', so I expect to be on here a lot!

Plan to take the car back to Europe with me when done playing in the sand.

Hopefully. I am a motoring journalist so I am planning to get some stuff discounted and for free in exchange for a mention in the magazine. Typical journo on the hunt for freebies!

Car will need a respray and full engine service, plus all the rubbers are toast due to the serious heat out here. Also, sand plays havoc with the bearings and moving parts.

I'll post my progress as it goes along.
