All 50 states require rear plates, but not all states require front plates.

BTW, in a lot of cases, a plate in front will detract from the lines of the car, and here in IL, although we require a front plate, many times you can talk your way out of a ticket if you're cool with the police. I'm sure many cops agree that they have more important thing to do than bust people for not having a front plate.

Front plate is required here in Nevada as well, but many dont run it, with the excuse that there "is no factory spot for it" which works. Also, I've seen exotics with no rear plates get out of tickets by giving cops a ride and whatnot.

Im from MD and you need one in front but i got away without one for like my first 5 years of driving. I went threw 2 cars with no front license plate. My first car was a 78 camaro z28 and there was no spot for it. and then i lost the plate so i didnt have it when i transfered them to my 97 Supra TT. But it was worth the risk just cause it looks cleaner.

A lot of cops (including the one I'm currently dating) are not nearly as well versed in exotics as we are, assume it's a brand new (or a newly aquired) car, the owner is waiting for the plates, and just don't want to take the chance on stopping one and wasting a bunch of time.

I believe there was a recent revision to the law stating that you don't have to run a front plate if you don't have a factory provision. I could get more details if you are interested. On a side note, I never had a front plate on my TransAm in the 3 years that I had it, and I never got any hassle. That car did have a provision for a plate.

i dont know how the whole dealer plate thing works out but ive heard of people just keeping their front plate behind their seat with a coupel screws in it and when they get pulled over taking it out and just telling the cop it fell off a couple days ago and they were meaning to get it back on soon.
thats probably the best idea ive heard so far.
