    Have been toying around with how to get more sound from my original 89 Mondial t exhaust. Replaced the cats (with Tubi straight pipes).... still, the 56 lb. Ansa can was still holding way too much back. Sounded "anemic" unless you were really flogging it at high revs. I was very disappointed.
    Considered a 348 Challenge exhaust, but would have to make up different mounting brackets for the Mondial t, anyway, and was warned that it would be offensively loud with only the single balancing resonator in between essentially two straight pipes.
    Didnt want to go for the $2K+ for the Tubi or X-OST....so decided to create a modified "challenge exhaust" using the original challenge as a model of sorts.

    Tubi straight pipes into 2.25" X-Pipe flowing to dual resonator tips. Fairly simple, and not S/S (so all in all less than $700 parts and labor).

    YEEEEEOOOOOOOW !!! Anemic no more. This puppy screams......no sleeping babies in my neighborhood.

    I'll take better photos when its not dusky, and I can remove the back valence....maybe even a sound file later.

    Damn, Jim. What did you go an do that for. Now people know that I actually drive the car, and approaching the 20K mile mark, it will never sell. I will be "stuck" with it forever. Darn the luck.

    All kidding aside....it is even more of a hoot now with the exhaust. Feels faster for sure.

    Actually, with you in Boulder, if you just let most of us know when you'll be starting it up and driving, we'll be able to go outside and hear it from at least a few states over.... :) :)

    Well, my "experiment" with no cats, and straight into X-pipe brought on the noise allright.... but with no restrictions it resonated badly (meaning loud drone) at 1850 - 2300 RPMs. At Idle: Fine. Rev with no load: Nice. Driving up through the gears: Nice and loud....sounded great.

    BUT -- and a big BUT -- At 1850 - 2300, really hurt my ears. Ruptured eardrums from childhood could not stand the drone. Around town would be nearly impossible. My left ear still hurts. So, yes, I guess these things can make your ears bleed.

    So, on to round #2.

    Ordered 12" x 3" glass packs with the intent to cut em up and replace the test pipes, to try to cut the resonance down as far forward as possible. Even at the small diameter and length, could not figure out a way around the frame....and would have had to try to fabricate the screw hole mounts for the O2 Sensors as well. So, that plan didnt work out.

    Decided to cut out the x-pipe, and retrofit the two packs in a single flow per each side of the exhaust. So now I have Tubi test pipes (no cats) and the two small glass pack "mufflers" into the twin resonator tips.
    It was snowing here the past couple days, so only the trip to the shop and back for a test drive. Still loud, a bit deeper tone, and pretty nice up through the gears....and best of all, my ears will survive. Not the rip snorting, knock the bird outta the trees sound, but noise which is what I was seeking.

    Will find out a bit more tomorrow -- Coffee and Cars in Boulder area. (with the 6" of snow yesterday it might be more coffee than cars, but I am going regardless. Roads are pretty clear now). Yes, I will have to sell or even consider scrapping the car now since its been driven in humidity above 50 percent. :)

    I think this setup will work for me. Loud enough, nice sound, assumed extra HP, certainly lighter weight -- and all at my forced budget pricepoint of under $750.00 (thats why no Tubi in case anyone asks -- that can be later. I just wanted the stock exhaust and cats off! ).

    Note to Furman: As for a sound clip -- I dont have access to a digital video, but if I get to, I will try. Thanks to JimShadow for trying to assist me with the sound files from my Blackberry, but they didnt work out (AVR's to MP3's).

    I listened to his video/audio clips, and it is very similar...but mine is probably a bit louder at speed, and thru the gears. I'd say either one....but definitely not the ear bleeder I had with nothing between the headers and the outside world.

    Hope all is well Regis...and hope that you find your cows. :)

    I think you wil be much happier with this set-up than the first, with no real loss of performance.
    I might have opted for a dual in/dual out single non mixing magnaflow muffler, adjusting the loudness with the volme of the muffler to what you want. What you did is pretty close to the same thing, perhaps even lighter. The bottom line is get the sound character and volume that you like...

    ...and enjoy all the literally thousands of dollars that you didn't spend on a tubi! :)

    Any one try these Dynatech Racing Muffler Inserts ? These would give some restriction in your first attempt, they would need to be cut and decrease the Dia. since their 3". I'm thinking going this way for my Porsche 911 first with megaphone pipes to see what the results are before touching the Ferrari.

    Russ, you are right on. Nice when you are not having to dump thousands into an exhaust...

    Your setup is really well, designed and sounds great from the clips. Mine is very close in sound, perhaps just a touch louder...bit real close. Definite improvement in the flow over stock.

    Most of my experience is with absorptive systems, but iirc from my reading hese were designed for really large pipes (i.e. big bore racers) as they do add a lot of resistance. I would **guess** the sound would be very raw and stil a bit blatty.

    I had a great opportunit to either buy 348 tubis, now on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120359861172&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem= Few Hundred bucks and have it modified [I like this idea best as the brackets are not that big a deal]

    or make my own, which we are attempting to do

    or take an old Mondial T exhaust and mod it for better sound [probably not good]

    OR just buy the things, but out of the budget with this stooopid economy right now.

    so, on the first thought, mod 348 tubis, anyone have some insight as to greater than bracket problems. I see little negative here, and the price is great.

    My locally made setup was about $700 plus the Tubi straight pipes for another $300-$400 (can't recall).

    So, if you can get a Tubi inexpensively....I'd say try it. You could always sell it later.

    Fit it without the hangers, and see how it sounds before you weld to it.

    good point...though thinking the bolting would better the sound, cause less rumbling/vibrations.... Sure that tubi will go over the $1,500mark. too good a deal to pass up...only thing is, most 348'ers have their sound already enhanced.

    One thing to consider in all this is the fact that a large muffler is quieter and has less restriction than a small muffler. That's why current cars/motorcycles have relatively large mufflers - they can meet the noise requirements AND produce the power.

    We ran dyno tests that showed no difference in 600HP+ engines using turbo mufflers and then with no mufflers.

    But admittedly an F1 car with a couple of mufflers on it would look (and sound) decidedly strange and who wants to see cars racing QUIETLY at 200 MPH.
