My 89 328 needs a new battery. Went to Interstate and they no longer make the MT-34R. Any ideas where in the country someone might have one still on the shelf? If not, what is a valid replacement. The Interstate replacement to the MT-34R doesn't fit in the tight space up front. Thanks, Nugget

Whisky, thanks. I checked out the thread and it didn't have much help actually. I have used the search function, typed in quite a few variations but can't find any previous threads that are very helpful. If you have a link to a past thread dealing with 328 batteries, or replacement to the common Interstate MT-34R which they now no longer make, then that would be very appreciated. Thanks, Nugget

I have an optima, car always starts, sits for a month at a time with no battery maintainer. I don't have any add on power draws. Car came with it. I've seen a number of people throw generics in there. My main concern would be corrosion or acid spilling. The optima is good for that I think. Sad to hear about the Interstate because that would have been my next battery and what I put in everything else I own. Just a preference.

Are your cables long enough to cross to the non R?

not trying to be a name dropper, but when i replaced gabriella's battery
i went to napa and got the perfect battery with a 84mo. warranty and
    absolutely no hassles.

i could buy 3 of those for the price of a fancy, smancy optima.

the local interstate vendor wouldn't sell me a battery 'cause he didn't have a ferrari listed.

when i purchased batteries for the gmc and the passat, same deal. no vasoline, no cable
extension, no skinned paws. gee, imagine right across the street from my house, too.

When I bought my new battery beginning of this year that Interstate was not available so I went with the Interstate battery similar with the terminals reversed since I had enough cable to reach. The R in the number is reversed poles. I'll have to get the number tomorrow but I think it was MT-34 This may give you some ideas on changing the battery

Why not try Sears DieHard, what's wrong with them?

Important point in this - make sure the terminals are the right way around or things will go bang!

I have a Bosch S5 007 in my 328. 74AH & 750A CCA . Look at the CCA rating of any battery you buy - it matters as much as the AH rating.

WHen you start looking at CCA ratings the reason for the price differences between batteries starts to become clearer as well.

In the past, I was big on DieHard Gold as it was a consistent top performer in Consumer Reports, but the last battery test of theirs that I saw was so scattered that I largely took from it (since nobody's testing the particular model we need) that they're all pretty good these days. Get an Optima if you're into that or just go get a quality name that'll fit.

Costo's batteries are made by Interstate, but come with a better warranty,
3 yr non-prorated replacement(?) Also the caps on these batteries do not
leak acid. Can't remember if I used group 34 or 34R, but it fit and the mounting
plate work perfectly. Be careful of Ferrari's battery leads, they are both the
same color, look at which one goes to the frame (and they are slightly different
    diameters).

These cars' battery has virtually no elec load on it compared to any modern vehicle. The oem batt for a 328 is only 66AH. I'd measure the original (or better yet, get the group number off of it) and go to Costco or Walmart!

Bought MB battery last week - checked Interstate first as that's when came out, they wanted $154. SuperStart at Shucks/O'Relieys was $92. Both are identical numbers both made by Johnson Controls. Check around. Brand name means little when most all come from the same mother factory.

Maxx34N, Wal-Mart, same info as for Costco, same 3 year warranty, manufactured by Johnson Controls. Just installed it today in my Mondial.
