Wow, talk about devaluing a car. 1976 Ferrari 308 Gtb for Sale | Classic Cars for Sale UK I like the "...this car was upgraded to a metal body." part.
There was a day that why a fiberglass body was used on a 308 was asked, answered and thought of as a bad decision made by Ferrari. Fast forward 30 plus years who would have thought.
Wasn't there a 328 that got an alloy body floating around? I could almost see it if it were aluminum.
sounds to me like a lot of BS. No way you can put a steel body on a fiber car without some additional major mods. Looking at the pics this is just an early steel car.
Yeah, they may just be referring to the evolution of the 308. Would seem strange to remove the entire body and replace it, unless it was severely damaged.
It's a Belgian car, been for sale for quite some time. I also think they meant the steel version after the glass one, not having swapped the glass body for a steel one. Having to translate (an ad) into English can lead to these interpretations/thoughts for those who's first language is English.
You can determine if it's a glass car by viewing the serial number. I couldn't find one in the advertisement.
It is also possible that the claim of the body being changed is some very 'light' research on the part of the seller. Ferrari has a claimed 'last' serial number for the glass cars yet there are many steel cars with numbers before the last glass car. In fact for at least a half year Ferrari made steel and glass cars at the same time. Even the registry has a lot of steel cars listed as glass. I suspect that the seller looked up his serial number, saw it as glass, and made the huge leap of faith assumption that someone must have 'upgraded' the body to steel at one point when in truth and fact it has always been a steel car. Without some serious documentation the claim of a body swap is a tough one to believe.
I suspect it was always a steel car. The issue is the translation to English. It is not this car that was converted to a steel body but the 308 series was converted to steel body.
If that chassis number is correct, then it seems very early to be one of those 1976 Steel cars. The first one that appears in Robert Retzlaff's registry is 19881. It's hard to tell what happened at Ferrari at that time, but it sure looks weird to me. If we knew the assembly number and engine number, it may give us a better indication of the actual possibility of this car to have been a glass one originally.
Do you see the VIN? My #20405 was certainly an early North American version....wet sump, steel. I do agree it would be a total rebuild to put a new body on a car, and (in the UK), why? Steel ones rust!!! Glass cars have steel underbody, of course.
Nor did I see one.... Plastic washer bottle totally wrong, added in late 1978. Should be plastic saddle bag in a '76 or '77. Spare tire is correct.
