I just changed the oil in my 95 355 and when I took off the filter I was expecting to have a fair amount of oil dripping out but did not get one drop. Shouldn't the filter be full of oil? If I press the diaphragm in the filter I get just a few drops. I have had a problem with oil burning at start up, wondering if this is related?

As long as you give it time to drain, it will contain no oil. Remember, it is upside down :)

    Bob,

The filter has an anti-drainback valve in it to hold the oil and prevent it from really being dry. Sometimes those valves don't work they are a $5 filter sold to us for $40 bucks (ferrari tax). Oil burning is not related to this. Oil burning is related to oil overfilling and getting sucked into the intake or worn motor parts like leaking valve guide seals and bad rings. Often the oil at start up is worse then seems to go away but really you are still burning oil you just can't see it. Make sure you oil level is right or go 1/2 on the stick to make sure then see if you are still puffing out oil. If so then leak the motor down as the next step in investigation.

Gravity is not just a good idea ... It is the law.
Don't do what I did, way back in 1997 with my 87' 328. Thought Ferrari charged to much for an oil change so ..... Did it myself in my parents driveway, I had NO clue the rubber gasket dropped out of the filter right before it got tight .....I even rubbed oil on the gasket and filter before screwing it on. So put in 8 qts, fired her up and was patting myself on the back watching the oil pressure go up and BOOM was quite impressed with the complete coverage of the engine in motor oil in 2 seconds flat, it takes a lot of cat litter to soak all that up.

LOL! You are a very secure man. Not many would admit to that! No harm done. Sometimes even the pros get it wrong. For some reason somebody could not figure out why the brakes were always spongy...

    Hmmmmm
I swear I read somewhere, in my 355 manual that .25 to .50 (quart/liter) consumption of motor oil per 600 miles of driving was considered normal, before I admit mine uses any oil ( trying to protect that resale value ) has anybody else seen that in the 355 owners manual ? I have already convinced myself putting 3-5000 miles on it a year actually increases the value of the car ..... Well at least that is working for me today.

Looks good to me, can somebody put one of those fancy "red" arrows pointing to the issue with that brake unit and also give me a description in print ..... I am not one of the sharper knives in the drawer ...... Think butter knife with a dull edge .......

OH now I see it, not really driveitdaily PM me and told me.

That non-oil-gushing filter makes for a pretty easy oil change on these cars. The other two things I can think of that are super easy are brake pad changes ( hand brake doesn't work through the caliper so much simpler than most cars), and getting to the clutch/slave cylinder. Anything else and maybe not so much.

Is is also normal to have no oil in the tank when I drained it? Does the scavenger pump remove all the oil from the tank?

The oil tank is higher than the sump. After shutdown, most (but not all) of the oil drains back into the sump.

It drains out of the tank while sitting, which is why you have to check the oil with the motor running or within 30 secs of shutting down. After the first couple of oil changes and nothing coming out of the oil tank, I don't bother draining it anymore.

If they had used Guinness instead of brake fluid it might have been OK. An Irish gentleman I know once claimed that the bubbles sink to the bottom in Guinness. :D

Interesting. I need to drain the sump and tank, plenty of oil coming out of both. (Done when hot)

I do mine after a couple of days of sitting as I know all oil is in the sump at that point. I never understood draining it hot, especially with synthetics.
