Formula One drivers are set to escape a grid penalty for their first engine change of the season, autosport.com can reveal, after teams agreed to a minor tweak to the rules.

Since the introduction of longer life engines, a driver has been automatically handed a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change in during practice sessions, or has been moved to the back of the grid if he has needed a new power unit after the start of qualifying.

But following discussions in last week's team principals' meeting in Paris, it was agreed that the first engine change of the season should now no longer result in a punishment.

In a letter sent by FIA president Max Mosley to teams, he confirms in writing that the rule tweak was supported by team principals.

"It was agreed that each team could have one engine failure per car without penalty during the 2008 season," wrote Mosley. "This would be the first engine failure suffered by each car."

The rule proposal still needs approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, with a vote on the matter expected imminently.

I think that's a fair thing since they're not letting them replace it over and over.

i'm confused...is it just a lottery for one race per season, or did they just abolish this whole silly 2 engine thing?

Me too (confused)...per car? Does this mean that your lead driver can switch to the other car and get two new engines?

Once again the FIA has crafted a rule for F1 that's incredibly clear and concise.

Yes indeed...and do not forget that if Max walks down pit lane with one red sock, special "rain" rules apply and you can only used the grooved tires on that side of the car.

Yes, but every team uses more than two cars/chassis in a season so why not built two brand new chassis for every race? I know it sounds stupid and costs more money but what would Ferrari care?

i never liked the engine change penalty rule to begin with so this seems reasonable but like others i'm confused does the team as a whole get 1 free engine change per season or does each driver get 1 free engine change OR does the team get 1 free engine change on each car (meaning the lead driver could potentially get two free engine changes)???

Ferrari and the other teams could build a two new chassis for every race, but that wouldn't give them a big advantage because they couldn't put a new engine it them for every race . It's the engines that blow up!

engine change penality is stupid rule. I don't understand why drivers and teams should be taking easy during race because of this rule. It is a race to see who is the fastest.

i wonder who the heck came up with the stupid 2 engine rule. we, fans expect to see real racing right till the end. not just installation laps on Friday, quali on Sat, then on race day, the driver turns down the revs and the engine in the last 15 laps to 'finish the race and save the engine life'.

F1, is really silly in so many ways. most of the time, fans already have limited chances to meet drivers, etc, and now it seems they're limiting the entertainment more than ever.
