Do I need one if I have 2 black fobs, more precisely why do I need a red fob?
the red fob is the master that allows for adding other fobs and such. You can get fobs cloned to match one of your current fobs at a cost much less than alarm ecu replacement. Which is what is necessary to get a new red fob specific to your car. Do you have the alarm PIN code for the car? If so have you tried it to confirm it is correct? You can use the PIN code to operate the car without a fob.
Incidentally my research showed that a new alarm ECU is $4,000...which is why I searched for a car with the red fob. Cloning, as mentioned above, is your only other option or entering the alarm code manually.
Read what Taz posted. This post is off the mark about the red fob. The red fob is used when initially programming the fobs. You can not program with the same PIN again so once programmed, the red fob has no special use or capability. You can not use it to add more fobs. You do need the PIN for your car, with that you can program new fobs but you must have a master with a different PIN and you had better know the PIN associated with that FOB. Alarm ECU and engine ECU may be 4K but you can send it to the guys in Australia. For 1200 they extracted the old PIN, provided 2 new fobs (so I have 3 now), programmed the fobs, and sent me the old and new PIN. That is kind of worst case scenario.
Does this work for the F430? I would gladly pay $1200 USD to have 2 new keys/fobs provided and programmed to match my current red key/fob. New keys are $900/ea from the dealer and they need the car present (involves shipping for me)
No. For the F430 you buy a new key and then take the new and old keys and F430 to the dealer, who zeros out the system and then programs the alarm ECU to accept all the keys. Works for up to 7 keys, as if anyone could afford 7 keys. No shortcuts I am aware of. Bulletproof, but expensive. Keys do show up on E-Bay for less money.

Terry, no need to go to a dealer for a 430. There is a shorcut which is documented in the Maserati world. I used it one week ago on a friend's 430 : press the working key several times (something like 14 to 20, actually I have not counted exactly) - at one point, the car reacts differently (no blinker) and is set in learning mode - then press in turn all the keys you want to pair - done!
I'll just put in a plug for user: gobble On my 360 - I had my PIN code and 2 FOBs (1 was a clone). I wanted a 'no clones' set of 3 (1 red, 2 black) and he made it happen through swapping, reprogramming, and issuing me a new PIN for the set. Couldn't be happier. Use his services with confidence.
Eric- I knew if anyone could figure out how to do the F430 keys, it would be you. Rick- Eric and I taught gobble the trick on how to make new sets of fobs with new PINs.
how does a new pin connect with the immobilizer??? I have red and clone gobble and no pin. so someone can make a new pin and my car with accept them??? Who does this. I found those guys in new zealand some where can not remember now.
I had my black fob cloned by gobble last October when i bought the car. It worked perfectly for a few days, so I put it away for safekeeping. A couple of days ago I wanted to test it, so I put in a fresh battery and tried it. No dice. No response from the alarm even though the fob appears to be working (fob LED). Thinking it may have gotten out of synch, I pressed it 500 times while sitting in the car. Still no response. So I am basically down to one working fob and no PIN code. From what I have read, the cloned fobs will work well if they are used continuously on alternate days. Otherwise they get out of synch. There is an outfit in Florida, ECU Doctors, who are offering PIN code extraction, as well as programming of original fobs (not clones), both red and black. They are also offering an immobilizer bypass for the 360. I have not used them yet, but I plan on sending them my alarm ECU for PIN extraction and fob programming. Hoping this works. It sounds a little better than sending it to Australia or New Zealand.
If you are asking which immobilizer BYPASS to use, I am aware of only one being offered - by ECU Doctors in Florida. If you install the bypass, your car will start without having to use the fob. It is then your choice to install a kill switch or another third-party alarm system for custom security.
